Been away!! Had a month off work, so managed to get lots done on the boat. Annual varnishing etc. The etc was a lot of work, still ongoing!! Anyway, Alghero. Nice enough place, dead in the winter and not a liveaboard port, my brother and myself are the only liveaboard boats there and it's a big harbour! That is the main other problem with the place, harbour surge, very, very bad. i've brocken four 22mm warps already and there are six out forward and six aft! lots of short splices already done! The marina itself, (SER-MAR) is finne, frederico the owner is a star! Always helpful and always checking warps etc. A good place to leave a boat forthe winter, with Ryanair flying to alghero, but not a liveaboard place. Basically a mistake. the weather is very windy and wet, we've had a bunch of rain and the storms have been very bad, where the marina pontoon is situated, gives little protection from the wind and no protection against the waves in the harbour orthe prevailing winds, (south, through west to north) The town itself is pretty, but eating out is not cheap. My cooking has improved 100%. Supermarkets are about same as UK, so not cheap. no newspapers after 30 october! Havent found any cider yet either!! Well thats about it so far, will report again.

Ah,yes! the wine, nothing wrog wiith that atall. Although the passerelle seems to not like it!! must try some more daring modifications to that. The cannanou wine is also good, forgot to mention that name to you on the PM.

THey say the weather is exceptional, but I see a lot of those big stainless springs brocken on other boats when I arrived, they would be dust with englanders weight! The pontoon which they left out the harbour on the other side, is matchwood. Over by the wall, is a better bet, its sheltered by the town and some large concrete jetties. When the wind has been really bad, 40 knots, the pontoons themselves are dangerous and you are boat bound, unable to negotiate them. But its only been like this for a few weeks!! late Spetember, and october were horrendous, noivember has been bad, I dread to think what the depths of winter will bring. No problem for the boat, but damned uncomfortable when you liveaboard, also the cost of breaking large mooring warps, starts to make the moorings look expensive. Still I chose the place, I feel more sorry for my brother, who only came here on my reccomendation. He had a berth in Almerimar, cheaper. Oh well!!

Its fine, for what you needf anyway, Costa Smeralda, is closed!! I mean it, its like a ghost town. You couldn't score in a one dollar whorehouse, with a hundred dollar bill stuck in your ear!! But you are more than welcome here, I am still finding plenty to do, you just have to hunt for it more. In my case I've always had to!!

Have you tried the family run pizza place where they sell pizza by the metre. I can't remember the name (the English translation is the Arch I think) but it's a mile'ish out of town on the coast road and just across the small road from the Picale hotel. It's good fun.

No, Havent tried it, I've been along the coast road a ways, so I'll have a look when I get back. Thanks David. Pizzas are cheap enough most places, just need to really avoid the old town, where the price of a bottle of beer doubles. Nice people everywhere, very friendly I've found.

well at least we aint got any bombs, yet!! It's not a bad place, but does tend to close after october. For a liveaboard, it was not my best decision. But, hell theres next year, I may have to return Spain wise next year for work, so will finally get up to the SOF and see TCM etc. We will see how things develope. Regards to "L" and good to hear from you again. Istanbul is never "Nice" interesting, very!!

Hi Colin,
Sorry to hear about your bouncy mooring, I know what its like. Just got back from a week on the boat, (Gatwick/Malaga.Monarch Air £68 return schedule). The surge (Lavente) was so bad that SWMBO jumped ship for 3 nights!!
The movement is much more rapid on a MOBO than a yacht, I dont remember being so uncomfortable when I had a sailey thing. Is this surging peculiar to the Med???
I tried to get a winter mooring else-where between Del Este and Gibraltar, but as the young lady in the Marina office said "The problem Mr B is that you have such big one." I think I know what she means!!!
Regards, David

Same as me 57 feet, is always a problem, I just book early! I'm not sure if its peculiar to the meddy, but it is to alghero, something about the shape of the bay.

I've taken a car to Calgiari. Place is a complete dump. It must be the only capital city in the world where druggies and hippies have taken over the old quarter completly. I didn't look at the marina but I wouldn't have too much expectation.
