New furling system for small cruiser

I fitted a profurl c260 to my Dehler 22 a number of years ago. It looks better quality than the equivalent Plastimo, but I have never really had problems with Plastimo and spares are readily available for Plastimo. The smallest Profurl has a very small diameter hole down the tubes so the...

    Consumer unit

I think you need a metal box for the panel. This recommendation was brought in for fire protection. Also you need a 2 pole RCD and 2 pole MCBs. This is what is shown in the 18th edition electrical regulations in the section on marinas and connections to boat installation. Alastair Garrod...

Removing mildew from a cockpit cover

I am another fan of Astonish mould and mildew remover. Every boat should have some at a quid a go. It is basically bleach but with a foaming agent which stops it running. It is also good for removing muck from moulded tread patterned decks. But it is bleach as my trousers learnt to their cost...

Boltrope main how to convert to slugs?

Sailright do some good videos on YouTube showing the different types of slug attachment methods. I had the main on my Beneteau 235 converted to slugs. The sailmaker just put braid through the slugs and stitched either side of the bolt rope. One advantage of this method is that it is very easy to...

Outboard for 19 foot trailer sailer

I had a Manta 19 and the engine was a Tohatsu 5hp longshaft saildrive. I think it was a 2 stroke. I used it occasionally on the west coast of Scotland. When you are bouncing about in a seaway more power is good and also the longshaft keeps the propeller immersed.

    Garmin transom mount clearvu

About 20 years ago I fitted one from a Garmin fishfinder (b&w). I built a small grp box and stuck it in the hull and filled it with fresh water. Worked fine. It was a small 20ft sailing boat.

Question about the MANTRA 19 yachts pl ?

The ballast keel is below the hull so it will heel when on the ground. I owned one for four years and really enjoyed it. The big advantages are it is only 6ft 6ins wide and lightweight so is easy to tow, and the masthead rig means the mast is short and light so easy to raise.

When can we go sailing ?

For England the stay at home rule ends on 29 March and self contained accomodation is allowed (not with shared facilities) on 12 April. So I think 12 April is the date. However marinas may think differently.

    Fishing vessel versus Trawler

I suggest you download this booklet. It describes all fishing methods. Basic Fishing Methods

    Figure 8 loop Vs bowline

Try a tucked bowline (yosemite bowline). It will not shake loose and if you can tie a standard bowline it is an easy extra tuck.

Winter cover - dehumidifier or not

My Beneteau first 235 lives in the lake district and has the mast down and canvas overall cover fitted for 5 months in the winter. The hatches and lockers are partly open for ventilation. I do not have a problem with damp or condensation. In fact the condensation is worse in early spring when...

origo cabin heater - do they work

My Origo cooker constantly sets off my two CO monitors even when I use it with hatch open. I like it for cooking but not for heating and I assume the Origo heater has the same combustion process. I also have a Feuerhand hurricane lantern which uses lamp oil. This creates good warmth and does...

    What boat is this?

I think it is a Prim Vent 21. A french boat from 1970 or thereabouts.

    Samsung Tablet

Just a thought,it may be worth trying a different charger and different lead. Also clean out the tablet socket with WD 40 or similar. I have had problems with Samsung connectors in the past and also Samsung chargers.

    Trailer storage

A few years ago I kept a trailer sailer at a caravan storage yard. The big advantage of caravan storage is that is usually secure. There is a trade body http://www.cassoa.co.uk. They list there members and security grade. This gives more confidence in the event of insurance claims and boat...
