1 Anchor = A device designed to bring up mud samples from the bottom

2 Anchor Light = A small light designed to flatten the battery by daylight

3 Baggywrinkle= The effect of sun and salt spray on your face

4 Beating to Windward = A method of flogging the crew to increase upwind performance when racing

5 Bitter end = The finish of a race when you are last over the line

6 Boomkin =A small young boom, less than one year old

7 Bow = A gesture from the helmsman as he crosses the finish line first

8 Chart = A type of map which shows you exactly where you are aground.

9 Clew = An indication from the skipper as to what he may do next

10 Companionway = A double berth

11 Deadrise = Getting up to check the anchor at 0330

12 Dead reckoning = A course leading directly to a reef

13 Deviation = Any departure from the captain’s orders

14 Emergency mooring lines = Old ropes too rotten to use regularly, but too good to toss out.

15 Estimated position = A place you have marked on the chart where you are sure you are not.

16 Flying Jib = Any jib when the sheets have gone overboard.

17 Freeboard = Food and drink supplied by the owner.

18 Great circle route = Ships course when the rudder is jammed

19 Hatch = A container on board in which to keep eggs

20 Headway = What you are making if you can get the toilet to work

21 Heel = A command from the skipper, usually ignored.

22 Heaving line =A rope used to hold onto to while being sick

23 Landlubber = Anyone on board who wishes he were not

24 Latitude = The number of degrees off course allowed a guest at the helm

25 Lubber line = Two or more guests waiting to get ashore.

26 Permanent mooring = A sunken boat anchored.

27 Port = A fine wine, always stowed on the left side of the boat.

28 Reef point = That part of a rock sticking out of the water
29 Rhumb line = Two or more crewmembers waiting in line for a drink. Spelling is archaic

30 Rope ladder = A ladder designed to get you into the water, but not out

31 Sextant = A device used to detect the nighttime activities of guests.

32 Shroud = Equipment used in connection with the wake.

33 Spinnaker = A large sail used to keep the crew busy in light winds

34 Spring line = A rope purchased at the beginning of the season.

35 Square rigger = A rigger over 30

36 Swell = wave that’s just great

37 Telltale = A crewmember who lets the guests know that the skipper usually gets seasick.

38 Variation = The change in menu when the labels have soaked off the canned food.
