I am out of the water at the moment. Whilst I have been out I have installed two new starting batteries.
Due for re-launch shortly I turned on the ignition to check all my instruments are working. With the ignition turned on all the warning lights came on and then went out, except the orange battery/alternator warning light stayed on and was flashing. Is this normal does it go out when the engine is started and the alternator starts charging the battery ?
I have never noticed it before but then I don't normally turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
If anyone could put my mind at rest I would be very grateful.
When I am re-launched its at the top of the tide and I have to get going quickly into deeper water. I wont have time to start checking alternator wiring and belt tensions if this light doesn't go out on start up.
If there is a problem I would like to know now. Can anyone help ?

You could attach flush muffs to the leg and a cork in the water intake under the skeg and run the engine(s) up whilst your boat is out of the water. I do it all the time - but then I keep my boat in a dry stack.

The batteries are charged and I don't have a leg its shaft drive. It would be a pain to run the engine out of the water especially if there is nothing wrong.

I have been checking the Operators Manual. It says that all the warning lights will come on at start up, to check they are working, but all should be gone out when running. All mine have gone out without starting the engine except the battery light, which is flashing. So I have still got the original dilemma will it just go out when I start ?

I have now discovered elsewhere in the manual that a flashing light indicates that the diagnostic function has registered a fault. As the orange battery warning light is an indication of a charging failure due to a slipping belt or poor connection I guess this would be consistent with changing starting batteries, since it inevitably involved disconnecting the alternator during the swap. If a fault has been diagnosed by the system then apparently the engine wont be allowed start !

I will try working my way through the diagnostic procedures when I am back at the boat on Friday. It all seems a bit drastic and complex for just installing new start batteries !

Am I interpreting this correctly ? Doesn't the system just reset itself when the batteries are reconnected to the alternator ? Has anyone else experienced this after replacing start batteries on a D4 ?

Thanks Paul .

Just for my education is it flashing because the alternator was disconnected ?

Will it just stop flashing when I start the engine without the need to acknowledge a fault or going through any diagnostic procedures ?

Hi there I have D4 260's on shafts and if you turn ignition on warning lights do the dance then just the battery light stays flashing until running that's normal.
You may have not noticed the lights flashing before as they don't do it when connected up to 240v with battery charger on.
So rest easy !
