Is that busy bit of our coast between Chichester and Poole Harbours the unhappiest part of our coastline to be based for boating? From the posts here there seem to be lots of disatisfaction from the Southern contingent, like...

Kamikaze dinghy sailors
Rip-off marinas
Lack of car parking
Sadistic ferry captains
Sun-sail fleets blocking up the IOW
Belligerent racers
Tea spilling wash from mobos
Swarms of PWCs
River-rage on the Hamble

Oh dear. Is it all worth the expense and grief?

Yep ...

I have suffered from side-swiping Jet-bikes, Sunsail swamping marina, racers shouting and screaming, dinghys filling Chichester entrance, high visitors fees etc. etc. - but still value the Solent highly for its 'closed' sea area and many harbours / beaches / inlets etc. that provide for a good BBQ / anchoring, night over etc. etc. The Solent boys can be sailing - when many more exposed areas would be void of the sail on water .....

Re: The fact that

so many of us put up, with all that you list & still haunt the area must tell you something.

Do Sheep look more attractive in sailing wellies?

I've been sailing in the Solent for many happy years and almost without incident. It's very rare to encounter any unpleasantness (even from the much slated S*****l boats) though I would agree it's become more crowded over recent years. I pity the PWC element - they seem loathed by many despite there being very few genuine boneheads amongst them.

I can understand novices finding it intimidating to encounter racing fleets at first, but that would be the same anywhere.

What am I saying? It's crowded, aggressive, expensive and dangerous and you'd all do well to STAY AWAY!

Jim, youre right it's damned dangerous the Solent. What with unexploded ordnance everywhere, warships who will open fire if you get too close, left-footed kite surfers, drunken conductors and shifting sands, boat rage, marina rage and punch-ups in all locations Sat night it's a relief to get back to the office Monday morn. Which is why I do it.

Never had my tea spilled yet, but then (as you know) I rarely drink tea underway apart from the Earl Grey morning kick-start.

You're absolutely right .. I shit myself everytime I run aground in case my keel hits an unexploded bomb .. do you know its been calculated that there are AT LEAST 185 unexploded war time bombs waiting for an unsuspecting keel to trigger them?

Does that mean that if you sail a bilge keeler you have twice as much chance of hitting one?

Do'nt be daft! However I have replaced my keel bulb with a rubber water ballasted one .. however rather than a satisfying thud on hitting the putty there is nothing .. so I've fitted a wee pipe from it up the mast so a wee jet of water shoots in the air from the mast top .

Yeah, and the government has suppressed that think-tank report about the deteriorating condition of the fuses and how even an echo-sounder could now trigger some of them. Bloody disgrace and I don't think they act until some poor b*****d goes aground with a holding tank and spray-paints the whole of the Eastern Solent.

That Hoon, he's full of crap.

Solent is so b****y dangerous now that it should really be left for the likes of us folk that get no aggro during the working week and need something to get wound up about at the weekend.

In view of all that we have heard and seen I would have thought that the charter companies should carry out a full risk assessment, under duty of care, and advise their punters that cruising grounds such as the Persian Gulf may well be preferable.

Re:Kite surfers

You can probably identify a kite surfers tack by which foot leads on the board. Right foot for stbd and left for port? Anyway they're usually flying so they ought to stick orange flashing lights on their heads and keep away from our tea!
