Major quandary! Need your help or else it's the Vallium.
Small but perfectly formed, brand spanking new Scandinavian beauty arrives in 10 days time. Sorry, forgot where I was, delete "spanking" - musn't over excite our large elderly readership.
Do we commission her immediately or wait until early Spring. Heart says former (fun & excitement) , head says latter (harbour dues, start of engine guarantee period etc.) Can't sleep 'cos of thinking about it.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO ?

Are you joking or what?

A new toy is about to arrive and you can't make up your mind if you should take it out of the box so to speak. Get it in the water now and you can practice with it while there is no one else about to spoil your fun. I know I wouldn't be able to resist.

I'm with Kev here, do it now, some of the best cruising during winter, not so busy, frosty mornings with flat seas, got a heater?

No but I've got a woolly hat and thermals. Its also the first boat we've had with a wheelshelter so the cold will not be a problem. Wonder if the V**** man could PDI the engine at short notice? Think I'll make a call.
Aah but then we'll get her all dirty!! Oh dear, decisions, decisions!

I don't think you will get it any more dirty just coz it's floating, after all you are going to be going aboard even if it is on hard standing. I think you will find that the seagulls won't much care if your boat is in the water or on the land, it's still air to surface target practice.

What boat is it anyway? Perhaps you could fill in your profile then I won't have to remember.

I think the yard/dealer has done you over a bit here. In 6 weeks time this will be "last years boat" so worth less if you and a boat delivered jan2 are for sale at the same time.

Can you gettem to date the build certificate Jan1?

Otherwise, of course, you must turn it on and drive around immediately.

We wouldn't dream of leaving our new love outside in the horrid wet & cold of Winter. Only a 5 star shed is good enough for her. How cruel and heartless some people are!
If she is christened then her nice dark blue hull will lie in the mud twice a day and get grubby.
Daren't post her vital statistics as she's not here yet and I don't want to tempt fate.

Think we'll call her Ulrika. She's got great looks, is be a bit noisy, but goes very well (allegedly).

Yes I agree re. 2002 boat as against 2003. In this case however we prefer the spec. & price of the 2002 boat and have spent 9 months scouring Scandinavia trying to scource same. Would it really make much difference to the boat's value in 3 or 4 years time with it being commissioned in 2002 and not 2003?

Not loads, but enuf difference to make it worth a phone call or two. Put it this way, if they were both for sale secondhand, same spec, same price, same everything, cept your was a 02 and t'other was an 03, which gets sold first?

As an active buyer of 3-4 yr old boat now...

I'd say 7% on asking price as an average... and I never check which part ofyear ...all IMHO

RE tcm & Learner.
Thanks for your views. This case is slightly different in that the boat will be unique in the UK. The boat is not on sale here yet, & may never be so - it's a personal import by us. It certainly won't be available in the future in the spec. (engine/drive) that we want, as the builder has changed from Volvo 150 + Duoprop to Merc. 120 + Alpha One. Thus no 2003 boat will have the former combination which we feel is superior for our useage. The 2003 spec. also comes with a considerable price hike.
On the understanding that our boat is almost certain to be unique will the fact that we commission it in 2002 rather than 2003 make a real difference in practice?
If so then we may well delay it as what is another month when it has taken us 4 years to get this far.

Go for it

You learn more actual boating and more about your boat in the inter as you have the sea mostly to yourself. Just make sure you get down there on the good days and make the most of it.

Most of the guys I know learnt more in the winter than in the summer.

I am boating again ;-)

Re: STICK IT IN.

There WILL be stuff that will break and need fettling or fixing, use the less daylight months to get sorted. If out of action for week in January because getting bits from only available source with stock.Ie Always Outer monglia or somewhere, can be put up with in fairly good humour. If go bust in nice summer, shades of Depsolitus scream shout shout jump up down arrgh etc.IMHO.

And here is the weekend weather..

I can only advise how I act and think.

The relative worth of the next buyer's will be TOTALLY different to yours . whether it is the Floggle-toggle latest - gooddam - up-your - whatsit in 3 yrs is irrelevant. What is important is what the next buyer THINKS.

INTERESTING, AS A NEWBIE buyer laatest model worth another +5%...IMHO, even if cosmetic!!

I think original facts stand .. for the sake of 4 weeks , which if you are like me, will mostly be taken up with false revelry with suppliers and like is NOTHING...bank the money and register 1/1/2003

Re:Now or later.

Hmmm. One presumes you are buying your boat for the enjoyment of being able to use it.I doubt that your enjoyment will be enhanced if constantly worrying about the losses that you will incurr whilst the boat is in your ownership. Find it curious that any future possible buyer will think a couple seconds is more important than the overall condition of your boat.
ie buy before 23.59 on the 31st it is a 2002 boat buy a few hours later and it is a 2003 boat and suddenly worth lots more.Ho Hum.
Prob the same type of person who used to line up to collect car from dealer showroom at midnight in order to have "latest ' reg displayed on new shiney motor car parked in drive for neighbours to admire/envy.
Suspect that boat owners divide between those who enjoy going on water however it is achieved and those to whom the boat is just something else to display financial sucess to others.IMHO

And here is the weekend weather..
