I used to have a BMC 1.5 engine which ran at a tickover of about 600 RPM which is a lot slower than more modern engines with lighter Flywheels. I just reduced the tickover speed until the engine would run evenly and not stall when forward and reverse were engaged.
Great engine which runs forever.
