I think that if you are looking for routine chaos then a trip to Poole harbour is in order.
Having berthed at both Poole and The Hamble I'd rate the crossing of the chain ferry on good ebb or the rush in and out of Cobbs Quay when the bridge opens are spectacles more worthy of your lens.

Poole will have to wait until I come round the other way
although I do expect to bringing the Centaur down the irish sea in the spring of 2015

As mentioned by others, do visit the upper reaches of the Hamble, above Bursledon Bridge. Once you're past the M27, things calm down as you make your way through Upper Hamble Country Park. Eventually the river divides; one branch ends up at Botley Mills, where the Romans used to bring stuff by barge, the other ends up at the Horse and Jockey in Curbridge (http://www.thehorseandjockeycurbridge.co.uk/Tide Times Horse and Jockey Curbridge.html).
The lower Hamble is one massive boat park but the upper reaches are a revelation. Very tidal, however, so it's definitely Duck Punt territory.

it just the pressure of bodies, boats and money in the Solent.
A modest trip around our lovely island helps to remind you that there are lots of places you can escape from the crowds.
The Solent on a bank holiday weekend is probably a time to either not go sailing or learn to relish the spectacle
and the solent is a brilliant place to observe all sorts of boats
the Chichester skiffs n moths are blooming brilliant
I would like to apologise for not being invited to film the boats, for invading the privacy of the sailors, for not checking the HR legislation.
I do think that the shots were taken in a spirit of artistry though.
I do hope some-one somewhere can find it in themselves to get angry about them for some reason though

Nope. There might be a photo rib out if it's a nice day, but that would be about it. There was a company called the knowledge zone who did weekly videos of Solent (well Cowes only really) racing which were quite good if a little dry - but they couldn't make it pay and gave up after a while.
Shame really - this is the sort of thing they used to put out.
Your filming would be very welcomed I'm sure.

I've not reached my 50th birthday (yet!), so I'll have to take your word for it, but, above the M27 road bridge what development is there that you can blame on the boating community? There is the boatyard immediately above the bridge (and I gather Fareham Council turned down a planning application from them a year ago to build some static "caravans"). That is it isn't it? Can't think of anything else.

I was offered a week's work filming for Cowes during their week lasy years - it would have been on a rib
However, I do not have adequate wet weather protection for my proper camera
and it involved a week on a rib and finding my own accommodation on the island.

I, too, knew the Hamble 50 years ago, when Mercury was a hulk moored in the river, rather than a marina and you could walk past Manor Farm to the river by parking up in Church Lane in Botley, rather than driving (nearly) all the way to Bursledon and back again.
In fact here I am, undergoing training in Dylan-baiting, in a photo taken from Warsash with Fairey Marine in the background, in the mid-sixties

not sure if you have noticed there is a lot more money down there
I once tried selling something to a scotish sailor and he ended up borrowing my boat for a whole year
of course after independence then Scotland will once again be a rain and midge free land of milk and honey where sporrans clank heavily with golden coinage of a yet to be determined provenance

Probably. Me and my dad (riding shotgun in the photo) would no doubt be hauled up in front of the Beak if we tried to replicate this photo today

Er, Mr Dylan..So , lets see. Yup help yerself, film all and sundry, just walk in, poke the camera zoom into anyplace that might drive a KTL hit up and the pounds in, use, beg, borrow blag and blog... Anyway I am wasting my time here and quite why anyone wants to sit in a marine traffic jam filming it instead of Ooh, I dunno, anything really.. Each to their own I guess. Shame its not really big springs, you could sit on the Bramble and play cricket and film that too!

of course the interesting thing about a picture is that after you have taken it the thing is still there
so I am not entirely sure how I am diminishing your life experience to the point where you come over as not being in the best of moods today
On the bright side I guess I am providing you with some free entertainment and some interaction with another human being - which you clearly enjoy otherwise you would not continually return to the font.
I am sorry if you don't like the pictures....

Ah, all fair enuff
Though I am a glass pretty full sort of chap.
Just enjoy. Doesn't the filming get in the way of just enjoying the river(s)?
I have hours of half edited video taken in some astonishingly beautiful and lesser travelled places along the Caribbean bits, but tow thoughts occurred to me. One, let the next lot find, enjoy and move along from them..
And Two. Embarrassingly I tend to sing a bit ( badly) when sailing and happy. So the wunnerful soundtrack of boat gliding over shallow waters or crossing mudbanks and corals where Christopher Columbus once did his thang, are ruined..
Note to self. learn the lyrics at least
The camera I use is a ?saddle? Canon which in sport mode "point and click'' seems to capture the spirit of a moment quite well.
I have treasured old Pentax 35mm sailing stills too. But resist the urge to place all my life on public media. ( How do you find the time, for one thing?)
Even the courtesy of this threads ping pong eats into the er creative flow, man of other stuff going on
In my head I have a storyboard of exactly the finished edited version of the Hamble Film, wonder how it will compare after the event..?

I have to sail past the mouth of the Hamble to get to and from our berth up the Itchen. At the obvious times it's somewhat busy, but not really a spectacle worth watching even for a simple bumpkin round from the East coast
If you were determined to watch a load of people motor in and out of the river (and worries about filming them are piffle in my opinion) then I guess you could anchor well to the east of the spit buoy (ie, the other side of the channel from the buoy). That puts you inside the usual curving line of boats coming in from the Solent.

as other have said, mobos opening up too soon, yachts hoisting sail, and if you're really lucky as happened a few weeks ago a knob of an OOD sets a dinghy course right across the busiest bit of the channel.
