Was looking through some old mags the other day and saw a picture of the teamphilips boat, was wondering what happend to it and them (team) all seems to have gone quiet lately?
It sank! The team were rescued and last I heard were thinking of a rowing boat for some challenge or other. Great pity, maybe some of the Blairs' DOME money should have been thrown there way? What does the panel think?
most of the starboard hull and one wingmast was washed up in iceland, a 7m section of the accommodation pod was found off the west coast of ireland in may. the second hull was recovered 120 miles south-east of the faeroe islands in august, it ws reportedly cut up and crushed.
It was very sad to see a project that generated so much enthusiasm (In Devon at least but I believe elsewhere as well) end in the way it did. I hope that Pete Goss will try again.
She broke up in severe weather, not as severe as some in the southern oceans, but very confused seas, unable to heave to with waves and wind all over the place. The central pod started to break up and would have detacted, Pete made the obviously difficlut decision to put out a mayday and abandon her. A very tragic loss of a boat which had so much public backing, especially in the west country, where Pete Goss is somewhat of a hero and a hell of a nice man aswell! No government backing or negliable. Pity isnt it, up here they think sailing is a rich mans sport! Building effing domes is of course much more important! Pillocks!
Fair to say though that Goss was way out on a limb with this one. Although spectacularly quick, TP incorporated so many unproven techniques, technologies and design concepts that the odds of the boat surviving were heavily stacked against her.
What would be a shame is if those ideas died with her. Are there folks trying some of these things out on a smaller scale, in a more evolutionary process, rather than revolutionary?
It was the kind of conceptual thinking where motor manufacturers, and maybe even some boatbuilders, get away with disasters behind closed doors and from them revolutionary ideas are adapted into something that works.
I admire Pete Goss for flying the flag and trying to break down the brick wall the British put in the way of endeavour. I think it could have been a very different story had he taken the project to France.
The team I believe was building a rowboat for the pacific challenge or something but were to late I think, but what he's up to now, I don't know, probably having a well earned rest! But watch this space, you won't keep that guy down for long!
