I’m going to buy some neoprene as a gasket round my leaky cabin window. It will be a continuous piece of neoprene. Has anyone done similar? I’m looking for advice as to what thickness of neoprene and also the hardness of the stuff. Re thickness, I was thinking 3mm. Hardness seems to be measure using a ”shore A” calculation so I’m wondering if anyone has any tips having done the same thing. The window frame has a total of 18 bolt holes for that reason I think neoprene would be better than butyl tape and I’m not messing about with ct1, sika flex, etc.

Any advise greatly and warmly received.

Cheers

Scapa 3507 bedding tape is a foam tape designed exactly for this. It’s a dry tape, sticky on one side that you stick to the frame. Wrap round frame and deal with holes once fitted to frame.

I used the 25mm wide, 3mm thick stick to the frame. So far after 7 years not a drop has passed the seal.

Good luck with your choice and fitting.

I have used neoprene foam tape to seal laminated windows in the wheel house of my boat and seals it very well.

I used 50 mm wide and wrapped it around both sides then used a second piece on the frame tat clamped the window into the frame

Why not butyl tape. It's sticky stuff that won't absorb moir,

what did you use to make the holes in the foam?

what did you use to make the holes in the foam?

I used a small electrical screwdriver to push a hole in the foam so the screw can push through without making too big a hole

I was recommended butyl by houdini windows when I refurbished some and installed some new ones.
Thanks, I find butyl tape has a habit of getting caught in the thread of the bolt and then it kind of gets pulled in a circle as you tighten the bolt down.

I used 3mm closed cell neoprene about 7 years ago. Never has a drop of water through them. It is starting to deteriorate now, I guess due to UV but still not leaking. it will be a quick job to unscrew the windows and fit another new sheet if they start leaking.

Pvc foam tape. Used in the glazing industry . Sticky on both sides but easily temporarily neutralised with soapy water.
Other types of tape can get squeezed out over time

Only 18 bolts! Wow, we had 48 nuts/screws on 4 windows and 20 each on the other six ! Over 300 in total!

Butyl tape worked for me, fabulous stuff. I wound it around under each screw head too! That took a while hand rilling it into a thinnish thread! Easy to trip off as well. It does extrude after being squeezed.
