Terrible- with any south in the wind you'll roll all night. With the southerlies we've had over the past week there will still be a residual swell there long after the wind goes north.

Hi JF
Thanks for info. Staying put tonight in Korissia, Kea , very strong southerly. But will be in Sounion tomorrow night 10 knots max forecast from west.
Any particular recommendations for an anchoring spot? Is it worth putting a line ashore? Or is it just a case of getting the anchor well in and living with the swell?

I'm not sure a line ashore is realistic there.
Never anchored in Sounion in westerlies, but it can be rolly enough just with (distantly) passing freighters. The adjacent cape can be a very draughty spot.
You'll get more shelter N of Cape Sounion in the Evia Gulf, or possibly tucked into O. Anavissou, about 7NM NW of Sounion anchorage.

As already advised, the Sounion anchorage is s**t in southerlies, indeed it's not the best of places at any time, with very patchy holding and seas woking into the bay.
We've anchored twice - once in 10-15 knot SW winds and once in 30+ knot southerlies - off the NE corner of Patrokolos (or maybe it's called Patraikos?), the small island about 2M WSW of the Cape; there were lots of fish farms and a fishing camp ashore, but we found ample space with good holding over clean sand in about 3m of water in the small bight to the east of them. It was a bit rolly in there too when the wind got up as the swell worked around either end of the island, but we slept OK and it was a sight better than in Sounion.

Many thanks, now in O. Anavissou. Wind going from south to a forecast NW. Good protection. Added bonus of the unofficial nudist beach there! Out with the binoculars, no shame!
Passed by Sounion in an F5 west wind. It did look cr.p!
Will explore the local port, Palaia Fokaia tomorrow.
Cheers
Pete
Ps. Are any of the other bays above O. Anavissou worth a visit? It's so easy to just ignore this side and head off to Poros or Aigina.
