I did an ocean crossing with a very experienced skipper who was ultra safety conscious, to a ridiculous degree at times. In his safety briefing he said the most dangerous thing on the boat - above decks at least - was the furling line. I can see that the prospect of having 600 sq ft of genoa set itself in a gale could be scary.
On another boat it was the runners - if you let them both go at once the mast went over the side!
