Well, I'm ready for the trip now with my new custom made boom tent :) although I'm confident the weather will improve...

Simonjk's forecast today on www.weatherweb.net looks good for the Poole weekend.

Just been going through my chart collection, in particular the mishmash of stuff I inherited on Ariam, and find that I have three spare charts of Poole Harbour. Varying ages, none current (the current and corrected one is in my own portfolio) but not prehistoric either and perfectly adequate for daytime use. Just thought I'd mention them in case any hitherto-Solent-only boats coming on this trip would find them useful.

May I suggest a little tip, even though I won't be coming ?

The trip across Poole Bay - once clear of N Head buoy and heading for Anvil Point - gives one ideal time, if there's a crew or autopilot, to practice old fashioned but essential navigation.

There are loads of conspicuous towers, spires and things on shore and marked on the chart, so have a go with the hand bearing compass, - and depthsounder too - in fact have several goes guys and gals, lives may still depend on these things when something like aliens or a duff electrician take out the GPS !

I'd find one handy Pete, I don't suppose we are allowed to photocopy the updated version due to Copyright!.

There was talk of anchoring in Studland Bay for while but not sure of the timings etc. I couldn't receive the contact list as my computer/e-mail wouldn't accept it  Has a rough itinerary been put out with times to set out etc. I could copy it off this site if one has been done. In reality I suppose plans for the following days sail will be confirmed in the morning once conditions are checked...

Well, also the fact that it's large, and coloured, and shiny semi-waterproof paper. You'd be better off with the old original than a poorly photocopied current edition. I can't see any major changes anyway, it will just be alterations to lights, the odd slight move of a buoy, etc - the sort of things that can be confusing at night but aren't a problem in daytime when you can see where you are. 90% of yachtsmen seem to swan around on old uncorrected charts anyway, I just have a slightly OCD compulsion to be up to date :)

I assume you'll be in Lymington, to pick it up?

I assume you've checked but the datum can also be different on old, even quite recent looking charts. This has lead to a coversation with me helming up a dark (and I mean DARK with no lights on the water or land and mountains all around with no moon) Loch Fyne when the skipper runs up from below shouting "mind the rock!"
Me: "which rock?"
Skipper: "200 metres off the starboard bow"
Me: "Don't think so, can't see one"
Skipper: Much panic

<later>
Skipper: "Sorry, the chart was the old datum, that rock was miles away..."
Me: chuckled and said something about YM Instructors :)

I may take Zephyr down the weekend before for a weekend with Swmbo. If you're there Zagato, we could catch up and agree where to meet on the Thursdaysail to Cowes.

There are still some names on the Post #1 list for whom I've not received a deposit.

Zagato,

yes, if you're sticking to my magnificent plan, you're pretty certain to arrive off Poole when it's at strong ebb - and the ebb at Poole entrance is very strong, with your boat you might be able to motor in against it, but it would be a fuel drinking, teeth rattling ' she cannae take it Captain ! ' sort of exercise, I was there once and was stationary, only made progress by lifting the keel !

So as it's a lovely place as well, I suggested anchoring in Studland to let the tide die down a bit.

As you approach the cliffs don't go too close to Old Harry ( ! ) as there's a nasty semi-submerged ledge sticking out - have a look at the charts first, something for a group briefing at Lymington I'd suggest.

Also when going from there into Poole channel beware the ' training wall ', this is well marked, a submerged wall on the Western edge of the channel designed to keep the channel from silting up.

You'll find the entrance a busy place; foremost, keep a lookout behind you for fast ships and ferries; there's also the chain ferry, but that's predictable.

The speed limits in Poole are somewhat lax, so expect fishing boats and buffoon mobo's of all sizes doing Warp 9 with no care about anyone else.

Despite all that you'll love it !

Please can i confirm my attendance for Saturday in Poole. I've had a strange couple of months but things seem to have settled down. I've got a meeting on the Friday, and depending what time I can get away will depend on if I make to the Solent on Friday but at this moment in time it's looking unlilely..
Are you still up for a raffle?
Are we eating out on Saturday, if so would like me to help out with bookings etc? I can recomend here http://www.oldenglishinns.co.uk/poo...hp?PHPSESSID=2509cacf98f403a57ac24d4fed985a81

PhillM is doing the spotters guide

Well, he's responsible for it. In fact he seems to have got the office junior to take a break from her photocopying and tea-making to do the legwork for him :D

(No offence to Holly intended, who I'm sure does a lot more than photocopying and tea in reality :) )

Oldest is, I think, 2004. I'd hope that somewhere civilised (as opposed to Scottish islands) would have been on WGS84 by then.

I also found a chart of Chichester and Langstone that my Dad bought back when we used to sail a Wayfarer out of Emsworth, and decided to go all the way to East Head (seemed like an epic journey to me at the time :) ). That's to OSGB36, as one would expect given its age, but more interesting is that it assumes satellite navigation systems will be working to WGS72.

(I say "interesting" in the Have I Got News For You specialist newspaper sense :) )

Any one planning on bringing Children?

Looks like we will be - my mate has arranged to borrow his nephew (was 4 when I last saw him, may be 5 now) for the Lymington to Studland leg, dropped off and picked up by his parents at either end. Mate is trying to impart a love of sailing - certainly working so far as the lad came out once on Kindred Spirit, absolutely loved it, and pestered his parents for weeks about getting a boat :).

Will only be coming if the weather's reasonably benign, though, as we don't want to put him off with a bouncy one for his second ever trip. Although I suspect at that age kids don't really know what to be scared of, and take their cue from us. If we look stressed and worried they learn that this is something to be scared of, if we're happy and smiling they assume it's normal and nothing to worry about. But best be on the safe side.

Rumbled at last! Delegation is my forte!

Holly is in fact a top grade History student at Southampton Uni, who works for me part time and yes she has kindly done most of the work on the spotters guide this year. Holly is on Easter holidays (just cannot get the staff!) so if you PM me or email me to the same address as last year, I will actually get my thumb out and get a final version sorted.

I’m away on business from Wednesday – back middle of next week. So I will email out a copy before I go. Any volunteers to handle last minute amends?

Ron, Holly gets seasick at the pontoon. If you got her aboard, you’d regret it.

Pete, like most highly educated people, her tea stinks!

BTW, as I suspected I’m not going to make it. Paean's progress is good but not quite food enough: Engine install completed, hull repairs completed, anti-foul completed, mast back up today, launch due 23rd, new main due 25th – sea trials for engine due 27th / 28th then all I’ve got to do is to get everything back on board and work out how to sail this virtually “new” boat.

I really should have renamed her “triggers broom”.

Ah, so my minor amendment sent to her email address won't have been noticed?

I was adding some crew names - Chris and Steph and possibly Nick.
