Sailboat or Yacht? Whats the difference?

Just a query,But what would be the difference between a sailboat and a yacht?
Is it the size, standing room, having a proper heads rather than a bucket?
I've no idea?

In which case you would obviously call a motor boat a motoring boat, a steam boat a steaming boat and, best of all, a paddle boat would be a paddling boat!

We might claim to speak the same language but that does not help confusion. Wasn't the "Brittania " called the Royal Yacht. But then around here we always to refer to Yacht racing. So it all seems to be a mix up. olewill

A yacht is a sailing boat or a motorboat that is used for pleasure as opposed to commercial purposes. So a sailboat and a yacht can be the same or different. Sailboat is specific, yacht more general.

Well I would never pretend my little 18ft boat is a "Yacht" That term conjours up an image of something much more grand.

So I refer to mine as a sailing boat. no more, no less.

"sailboat" is American - one of many nasty Americanisms like "gotten" that have crept into English useage. Coca colonisation.
