Rival 41 speed?

Can any owners or ex owners of a Rival 41 tell us what kind of speed you can expect under sail? How many knots per hour would you use for passage planning? Any opinions or advise about owning one would be very welcome.

A 41ft mono will not average more than the square root of the LWL
say 6.4kts and this will need a decent breeze. In practice for
passage planning I wouldn't assume more than 5kts.
A Rival has a good reputation as a cruising boat.

I have a Rival 38 which is obviously a few feet smaller. She is a rather heavy boat and doesn't sail too well in light winds, but give her a force 4 or more and she'll be pottering along very comfortably at 5-6 knots on average. In light winds we often motor sail as it can take a long time to get anywhere at 2 knots!!

There are three methods at least for predicting boat speed:

1. Nominal Hull Speed (Vh) is based on LWL and for the R41 gives 7.66kn
2. Using a Speed:Length ratio (based upon an estimated half load displacement, LWL and displacement:length ratio) gives 7.78kn
3. Projected Maximum Speed (Vm) based on estimated half load displacement, LWL and 100% sail area (from IJPE) gives 7.40kn

It is suggested that for a cruising yacht the ratio Vm/Vh should be around 1.06. (Which illustrates the yacht has the sail power:displacement:LWL to drive over its speed limiting bow wave). Vm/Vh for R41 is 0.966. This suggests the R41 is somewhat underpowered/overweight. However the resultant speeds closely correlate and may in themselves be satisfactory for your purpose. Note that that half load displacement is not finite and may vary between boats as may IJPE dimensions.

I'd work on 6 knots offwind and 4.5 to windward.

Both are fairly pessimistic, but comfortable.
