After having the boat near to home (on the Thames) I have finally persuaded SWIMBO that we need to move her back to the coast! I have really missed the sea and am looking forward to some proper (extended) cruising. We are going to base ourselves at Cobbs Quay to be near family but intend to make use of the Freedom Berthing and will probably keep her in the Solent for extended periods. We should be down at Cobbs by the end of March and I am already planning to go west when the sun is blazing down in August! I really hope to meet a few more of you this season as so many have been incredibly helpful.... I think I owe a few beers!

Cheers
Rob

Good choice. Thinking we might do the same. River is fine for a potter but it doesn't tax the brain and it gets rather 'samey'. I also like the atmosphere of a coastal marina. Even with the wind whistling through. Have done both sail and power on the coast and nothing beats a good thrash through the chop, moor up and having a beer and watching the world go by. On the river I'm also finding the lack of lock keepers on duty rather tedious. Not to mention flooding...

How do you intend to move the boat to Cobbs Quay? Transporter or long passage on her bum? If this method we need another trip write up with piccies please...

I did the move from Bray to OV last August and whilst i miss the river I am looking forward to a full season on the coast.
I agree with Cashbuyer it can get a little 'samey' but will probably return one day.

Nothing to do with where you keep the boat, although look forward to seeing you on the water down here, but ...

What does SWIMBO stand for ?

She Who 'Immediately' Must Be Obeyed perhaps,

or She Who 'Instinctively' Must Be Obeyed

or She Who 'Idiotically' Must Be Obeyed

or She Who 'Irritibally' Must Be Obeyed

???

Thanks to all for the responses! It will be great to enjoy Poole and the Solent again. We will definitely look you up Nathan once we are down. (We will be on D74 from 12th March I think.) Good to hear that the bridges are better now although the river has taught me a great deal about bridge clearance and air height. (We managed to get her under a bridge with 10cms clearance last year... yes I did have to lie down at the helm!)

I don't mean to put river life down but I have always enjoyed the adventure of boating and even short trips on the coast seem that little bit more exciting.

Paul, Looking forward to meeting up... one sunny Sunday in Bembridge perhaps? Maxsisi is running beautifully thanks to you.

Finally SWIMBO means "she who must instantly be obeyed" in my parlance. In truth though Mrs Jonesey is as mad about boating as I am so I think that makes me a pretty lucky chap.

If you want a crew give me a shout i love that trip. Used to do it at least twice a year (thames winter, south coast summer) haven't done it since a one way delivery last spring.

Slight change of plan. Cobbs ramped up the cost after the initial quote so we are returning to Chandlery Barge. I will post some pics and a report as things unfold. Today she was lifted and had props and rudders removed. Lifting onto transport tomorrow.

Interesting, please can you explain the improvement, most rumours are that you can get held up in between the bridges for quite sometime. I was last there in August and stayed at Dolphin Quay as opposed to Cobbs', just to avoid the bridges.

Roger, there were issues early in the last season when due to "technical" problems the twin sails was only working at half speed. The only times ( as far as I know) that boats were kept in the basin for longer was if it took longer for all the boats to enter the basin. Generally the waiting time was around 10-15 minutes, enough time to get fenders in etc :)
The walk to the Quay from Cobbs takes about half an hour. This year the on site pub is being re-furbished. The berth holders facilities are about the best I've seen.

Thanks for that, sounds like a recommendation.
It seems MDL are investing quite heavily in facilities this year.

We really like Cobbs and will always stay there when in Poole. We used the double bridges last year without a hitch but the truth is that the Hamble was nearly £2000 cheaper....

Sounds about right - MDL @ Cobbs about £2k more than Foulkes for around 38 - 40'. Also with Foulkes you aren't reliant on the bridges working. Foulkes is just over half the MDL Hamble Marinas, meaning Cobbs would be about £2k below the Hamble Marinas - no contest IMHO, Foulkes is also in a few minutes walk of some great pubs, and may soon have its own refreshment facilities.

But with a Fly, you are at the mercy of the tides at Foulkes, which is why it is cheaper than the marinas south of the A27 bridge.
