This is going to be almost embarrassing to ask - but I genuinely don't know the answer !

After 3 years of being a second hand boat owner - I've atlast bit the bullet and placed my order for my first new boat. Sorry to disappoint so many of you, but it's of the "stink" variety rather than a "rag" type.

My question is simply - do I have to register it with anyone after deciding upon a name ? Any radio communication would be via hand held VHF, so no need to register for radio. But what about the boat itself ? Oh I forgot to mention, I'll be using it around the coast not on inland water ways.

Also, and again I'm ashamed to show my ignorance, but is there any more to Christening a boat than the way the queen does it ? "I name this boat .....etc ..... and god bless all who sail in her " ? No prayers to the Gods needed ?

I look forward to anyone taking the time out to reply - Thanks in Advance.

Neil.

Only one law I can think of and that's that you've got to invite everyone from this forum to a lavish launch party and none us are allowed to leave until you've got us thoroughly drunk on Champage - Bollinger as a minimum of course.

you don't have to register the radio but you'll still need a licence for a hand held which is 20 quid (I know this as I've just put my renewal in the post).

As far as boat reg is concerned then you may as well bung it on the small ships register as it's dead cheap and you'll need it if you do venture abroad.

I used what I think is the Roman way of christening a boat. I poured from a silver jug ( v small ) , champagne over the bows while naming the boat. The jug was then thrown into the sea as an offering for the sea gods. The rest of the champers was then given a good home .
