Priming bulb

I'm thinkng of fitting an inline priming bulb between the tank and fuel filter.

Is there any downside to doing this that I should consider?
 
As per Paul's comment, the ends fell off my cheapo primer bulb; however, the Quicksilver one I replaced it with has lasted much longer. I can change the primary fuel filter, and then pump the primer bulb to push diesel around the loop. The engine starts immediately; no faffing around with bleeding, or manually operating the lift pump.

But how do you know if the one you're buying is decent quality? I suspect that at least some of the name brands are exactly the same thing except dearer.

And can anybody tell me whether this sort of thing might be suitable instead? (One review of the same thing from another supplier mentioned it replacing one on a tractor.)

This (below) seems a similar thing but I can't see how it would be used except with a further fitting with a non-return valve (which is presumably what the lower part of the Febi primer above is?).

The Quicksilver ones, for instance, seem like good quality and last well. Or, buy one from the likes of Peugeot or Citroen etc, they fitted tens of thousands of them.

That style does work, i have one on each engine just like it.
 
Why not fit a 12v facet pump.. just put a trailing lead on it and tip it off 12v to bleed/ prime...

I bought a priming bulb a few years ago and it went hard pretty quickly so maybe there are petrol only ones...
 
I have had a ''Sierra'' one for years, very sturdy rubber (a lot more than cheap ones); I eventually replaced it as a precaution with an identical one, but after having cut the old one in two pieces to check its inside I found it very clean.
I fitted mine with long hoses: on my engine the lift pump is on the opposite side of the injection pump so it would be impossible to purge the engine while being alone, the long hoses allow to pump fuel from anywhere around the engine, I could not do that with a mechanical integral priming pump, and prefer to limit electrics.
