I am thinking of buying one of these and would be single handed most of the time; I would appreciate any advice as to their suitability and performance.

They are very well built with good quality fittings and very easy to sail and certainly quicker than most. Love the cockpit mainsheet, so much easier than coachroof, gives far more instant control. They handle very well in strong winds when a lot of the lighter AWB are struggling. The tiller version will probably make single handed easier and plenty of feel through the tiller makes sailing easy. The cockpit lockers are much larger than most and give ample storage.
Most people who own them tend to keep them a long time, which must say something.

Maxi yachts hold their value much better than most, a lot of the credit for this seems to lie with the importers who as brokers insist on maintaining very low rates of depreciation and must encourage sellers to hang on for the right price. A fine example of continued support for the product they sell.
A few years ago I tried unsuccessfully to make a deal for one but found that a new Finngulf 33 was better value, unfortunately it did not benefit from similar support so the second hand price later was much lower, some potential buyers had no concept of what she was or the quality it offered.

SD Marine haven't been agents/importers for Maxi Yachts for quite some time now(*), but there reputation is such that many Maxi owners go back to them when placing their boats on brokerage.

* IIRC they ceased to be importers when Maxi ended production of the 1100 without a replacement boat being in the offing.

With the self tacking jib set up, it must be pretty easy to sail single handed. Not aware of any problems of handling under engine either.

Many thanks for the replies. From these, studying the web and a lot of inspection I have had my offer accepted on a Maxi 1000 - it's going to be quite a change from my current First 21.7!
