My next boat.

I suspect this might well be where I land. The 27.7 would suit my program pretty well. Only downside is they don’t really sail to rating, but then that isn’t really an issue as racing isn’t my main objective. They are a popular boat here; I just missed out on a smashing one in Saint Malo because I was dragging my heels.
If you're prepared to go that bit flightier and seriously consider the 27.7, have a look at the A31 that's on yachtworld.

Nice idea. I did think about the A31; there was one for sale with an asking price closer to my budget, but on reflection I think that it is too close to the race boat end of the compromise. Perfect for sailing with my mates, but maybe a bit too frisky for pootling around with the missus.

The one you mention looks great. Really well equipped, but already €12 k over my top budget and all of the sails are 15 years old…

It’s a lot less budget wise, but for a short handed, narrow beam cruiser / occasional club racer, the Hanse 291 / 301 is worth a look. It’s based on the Aphrodite 29/291 by Carl Beyer, and very different from the later Hanses. SA/D of 18 but ballast / displacement ratio of 40. A good sailor raced one single handed in our crewed club race fleet and it was very competitive.

As you’re in the EU, the Dutch (and later German) built Winner boats are also worth a look. They were designed by Cees van Tongeren at van de Stadt who created the brilliant Dehler DBs and all their cruising variants like the 34, They’re a more modern boat in that spirit - powerful rig but lots of ballast low down, nice interior and very handy in a club race. The Winner 9.00 fits the size limit.
I like the look of the Hanse 301. This example ticks lots of boxes for me with the exception of the teak decks 😱.

You seen this, in budget, X 302 ?
Yes I have. Very high up my list. Looks in good nick (Baltic boats often seem to be - not so much UV, short season and often the winter months stored under cover).

I’ve always fancied sailing in the Baltic so the prospect of bringing a boat back from there does not daunt me in the least, au contraire is quite an attractive idea.

That’s been for sale since at least March. Agree it’s a shame about the teak decks - otherwise it’s great.
I’ve also just noticed that the reason it seems so roomy is that it has no heads compartment. That definitely wouldn’t work for ‘er indoors.

I really miss our 301 (with a heads compartment!) It was a brilliant fast small boat. It sailed to its handicap. The original Hanse that was the foundation of the Hanse empire and based on a Scandinavian design.

We very nearly bought a 27.7. They are not nearly as tough as a 301.

They were built to be light to give their performance and it shows.
I could seriously move the whole side of the boat whilst using main winches.
I also saw evidence on a lightly used boat of serious stress cracking at the waterline in the long deep single rudder.
The lifting keel design was poor.
Don't be tempted as flexing plastic doesn't stand the test of time.

Thanks for the feedback. Interesting.

Hanse 301 very definitely one of the ones on my list of possibilities.

Friend has a first 31.7 and seems a nice boat and very capable around the Channel Islands. Although had to have a new mast. Was out on a blustery day and watched a 27.7 falling over at regular intervals as the crew seemed slow at dumping the main. I always think the smaller boats can be a bit short on ballast if short handed as the crew can make up 10% of the ballast. My choice of a boat about that size would be a Scampi, rustler 31 or a hustler 30. Just as alternative suggestions. Happy hunting.

I think they might be open to offers on some of the Grand Surprise rental fleet at la trinite.

I just downsized from an Elan 362 to an Elan 31, I think she's a great choice.

Given the time of year, I've not had chance to sail it much other than on the 12 hour delivery trip home, though she sailed very well there.
So far I'm very happy, I've not noticed any obvious defects to do with build quality, and in fact they've noticeably improved the construction from the last Elan I had in a number of areas, no alloy toe rail as well is nice.

So far she seems to be a really nice compromise between something that can do well at club level racing, but she's large enough I could spend a few weeks onboard without feeling its too cramped.
As with all boats, try and get the lead keel version, and the later ones had a Volvo 2020 with saildrive rather than Yanmar shaft, and a slightly improved deck hardware layout.

However my last 3 boats (including this one) have all been Rob Humphries designs, so maybe I'm a little biased!

Anyone have any views on the Maxi 999 ?

I remember going on board a slightly bigger one some tears ago (a 1000 or a 1050) and remember being impressed by the quality of the joinery. There seem to be quite a few for sale in the €25-32k price range.

Sadly the Maxi 1000 is too big,

Very competitive for racing, lovely interior. Great build quality and sailing manners. Hard to go wrong with a good condition Maxi from that period or later.

Yes sailed a friend's from hamble to burnham. Lovely boat, sailed very well and very solid feel.
