Mast weight. Wood vs aluminium

Which would be lighter: a 24ft hollow tapered spruce mast or a tapered aluminium mast of the same diameter (about 4 inches). Both would need to be of adequate strength of course.

I would speculate that it would be a closely finished contest, and I wouldn't like to predict either way. I've come across one or two hollow spruce spars that were quite unbelievable in their lightness.
