I have an old one which I am trying to take apart - its seized. I have got the rope drum offand the gypsy but the rest is jammed. Any ideas which bit to attack next?
Mine is a Royal Major (altho' it's in the garage now as I replaced it with a Lofrans electric windlass). So, not sure if this applies to yours. There should be a circular plate on stbd side I think, which is screwed in 5 or 6 SS machine screws. When I did mine, we had to drill these SS screws out. Use Duralac when you put them back in to minimise corrosion. Worked well afterwards. Good luck!
I might be able to help you as a last option. I may be able to locate a suitable replacement from a range of reconditioned or "seconds" product that I have a source for.
Have same model windlass and had similar problem, but not so severe. Stbd side (with gypsy) shud disassemble fairly easily to clean cone friction clutch which can corrode badly if not seviced regularly. Suggest u look at Lofrans website, which has brake-away drawings and part lists - see www.lofrans.it/english/dimensions.html. You can also phone UK distibutor, EC Smith + Sons Ltd, at 01582 729721. There is a guy there who is very familiar with Lofrans (can't recall a name, unfortunately) and was very helpful to me with free advice. Good luck. Lofrans make excellent kit - it's worth the effort to save yours.
Addendum - Seem to recall E C Smith mentioning that the big screw on the top of the main housing does nothing! No need to remove, certainly don't put lubricant (or anything else) in hole! Apparently there for use in a different model windlass.
