LifeJackets - is everyone a pansy these days?

STOP PRESS! So does this mean that i'm an inexperienced pansy if I wear a lifejacket? Better get onto the Irish Government and get them to change that law quickly, god forbid my cool, elite image may be ruined /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
The original post was in my opinion quite a sane and balanced post - it was the post's title that got everyone going - and boy did it?

I find it sad that we can't have a thoughtful discussion without descending into insults. I thought there were potentially interesting issues, but I will stay away from such threads in future.

In such a case would it not have been better to be clipped on?

In UK waters outside of Summer wouldn't the cold get you long before you'd have time to drown?

Another issue - It's common to wear a LJ in the tender going to the pub on the basis that that's the most likely time to go in. Would it not be better to be mobile in the water to swim to get out of the cold water ASAP? Easier without a LJ?

Just questions.
 
Lighten up whippy snappy......there were no real insults, just a bit of piss taking and leg tugging, I certainly am not offended by anything anybody had to say. Also there were many valid points raised and some, although I may not agree with them entirely, were interesting none the less.

If you can't stand the heat though, it is probably wise to stay out of the kitchen? That would be a shame though, because I am sure that you have just as many interesting and valid opinions as anyone else /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Have you ever tried to swim in wet clothes and boots? A LJ will give much needd buoyancy and if you swim properly (i.e. on your back with wide arcing arm movements) you'd be surprised how much progress you can make.

As is pointed out in this months ST, Eric Tarbaly and Rob James, both highly experienced sailors, both died of drowning...

Ah yes, and there but for the grace etc..........However, I doubt they drowned whilst clipped on? unless their lines were too long?

Being a little more serious, a lot of people have raised some very good points, and some that the less experienced amongst us would do well to take note of /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

For myself, I will say that I am not against the wearing of life jackets, and I think the best are auto inflatables with harness and crotch straps, as in fact mine are, I carry two aboard, and yes they are checked annually. Strewth, I have even been known to wear one on occasion! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

However, I will make the decision as to when I will wear one and when I wont. I find that offshore, a harness makes more sense for me, and single handed I am almost religous in wearing it if out of the cockpit, I have clipped on in the cockpit from time to time, usually when my bottle is going a bit wobbly /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Trouble is, some folks get a bit zealous about these things, and common sense tends to drift off down wind? If other folks want to wear an LJ every minute they are aboard their boats, that is just fine by me, but don't tell me that I have to, or that I am somehow not all there if I choose not to.

Eventually everyone will wear LJs all the time. It's called evolution. The ones that don't will not survive to breed and pass on their reckless genes. Only the cautious who wear them at all times will have that opportunity. (That's what she told me, anyway /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
 
I started that other thread just after doing my annual lifejacket service. I think that only one jacket was used last season. The cylinders get rusty but a quick brush and some de-rust on them does nicely. You can weigh them to make sure they have not leaked. The actuators are not rocket science and you can see whether they are OK. I always blow them up and check for leaks, give a bit of a clean and Bob's your uncle.
