Leroy Somer Windlass

Yes, just untighten the rope section and the clutches will separate allowing the gypsy to turn. For info I have just stripped mine completely on my Bene 381, brushes problem, but now sorted. Am writing it up with pics for PBO.

Stu, Any news from PBO when they are going to publish your article? Not in the current edition that has just arrived and is not mentioned in their list of what will be in next month.

As a matter of interest, do you need parts for a Leroy Somer windlass?

My windlass is 18 years old and knowing that something must fail eventually i would like to be prepared by at least having some knowledge of how to dismantle it. I hope when the time comes i will be able to repair it. Do you know of a source of parts? I have hopefully attached a picture of the model i have. Thanks.

I don't know a source of spare parts as such, aside from an old 801 (?) sitting in my garage! It is quite a different shape though.

Looking at yours though, the gypsy and drum seem in great nick and I can see no sign of corrosion. The gearbox and motors were I think quite good. You have obviously done a good job of maintaining it. My post was really just in case you needed some bits.which might have been a cross match to my retired unit.
