watching, sleeping or reading

It's a bit surreal getting reports like this while someone is actually out sailing :)
Pity there is no green with envy smiley!

it is an interesting experience.... but passage making is not terribly entertaining

I do like to have the communications - four miles off from Great Yarmouth plus a bit - better connections than at home

v comforting to have the weather forecasts though

+1

I used to be happy spending two weeks at sea on Stavros, but now find I get bored crossing the Channel. I think it's because the crossing is a long daysail, so I'm anticipating arrival, rather than an ongoing passage that will end at some distant future time.

Also because on the ship I either had a dozen people in my watch to look after, or a bosun with a long list of jobs to keep me busy. So I think in future I'm going to make sure I have some kind of relatively easy boat work that needs doing, to keep me occupied under way.

The old windjammers did all their maintenance at sea, time in port was for handling cargo.

When I have newish crew I normally teach them how to splice ... after a long trip every damn rope on board has a loop in the end.

Looks like you are okay weather-wise until Thursday morning, good luck I hope it holds.

I love the rhythm of passage making, but the first two days are always the hardest to my mind. Once the routine is established I find the patterns of the day really interesting, I know that it can get a bit repetitive however all of my most memorable sails have been over four or five days.

Passages more than 48 hours are my insight into what purgatory could be like. That and the reception bit after weddings whilst the photos are being taken and before things actually start to happen.

I guess that it is horses for courses, I also love five day cricket matches.

I am with you all the way as far as that dodgy bit at weddings are concerned though.

Try a week or two. You get into a lovely routine of eating and sleeping and watch changes.

I always have ONE drink per person at 1800 before the evening meal and at the watch change. A chance for everyone to be up and exchange news.

With lots of crew we have inter-watch quizzes and cake baking competitions. The good news is that everyone eats the offerings anyway.

You've been on the wrong boat. Think of the beauty of the sky at night offshore and the pleasure of the sunrise (when it is not actually raining).

I did suggest to one boss that he could improve productivity at work by keeping everyone in the office 24 hours a day, allowing them a nap under their desks every four hours and drenching them with a bucket of water every now & again, but he didn't go for it.

I agree about the weddings bit. Wedding photographers should be keelhauled, just on principle.

The last wedding I was at (alright, civil partnership technically, it was before the law changed) livened up this part by having us all stroll through the leopard enclosure to the giraffe house. After having some of the obligatory pics taken around the main building, the happy couple were whizzed across to join us on the back of a golf buggy decorated with white ribbons. They then appeared on a balcony at giraffe-head-height to hand-feed the animals their lunch :)

Well, it's different :)

The last one I went to (my brother's) the guests were all given drinks and canapes on the hotel terrace where we could watch the photographer at work and were in range to be grabbed for the necessary poses. Seemed to work very well.
