I have before mentioned that I had a quote for yacht insurance and it was far less money than I currently pay, some forum members asked me to check the conditions before going ahead, so I have and there are no restrictions like 6 months on the hard standing/where I can sail to/survey not needed etc. The quote is £140 against £350 Current charge, My boat is 12years of age and kept in a marina I am over 50 (guess who gave the quote?) Perhaps others of my age may be interested certainly Kim Hollamby might want to mention it in the PBO and check out the pros and cons.( I realise that it probably wont be good for insurance advertising) as yet nobody on the forum has any experience of a claim so that maybe the place to start?

Re: Old & Gibbeering Insurance Corporation

I am very closley involved with the insurance company to which you kindly referred! Our rates can be so low, partly because the most serious accident last year was someone crashed their wheelchair into the boat. An increasing number (2%) of clients do occassionally sit on their boats and an impressive 0.51 % actually left the pontoon and went for a spin. The number of people who have forgotten where their boat is, and have to ring us up to find out, is static at around 86%. We estimate that 5% of clients actually don't own a boat, but they or their wives keep up the insurance payments for old time's sake.

Can anyone recommend a good and reasonable boat builders policy to run until the survey and launch time?

I use K C Powell and they were £150 cheaper than my previous insurer. Other massive advantage is that when you ring up you talk to someone who knows what they are talking about and they are able to make sensible decisions there and then.
How often have you talked to someone (normally a young laidy) who does not have a clue what you are talking about!

Oh don't tell everyone they'll all want to use them. Next you'll all be anchoring for free in the east coast rivers and wanting to pay less than £20 a night for a marina berth. Then it'll be a billion radio checks on ch 16, nowhere to park the car and people in 60 foot yachts racing up and down the Wallet shouting 'water'. A nightmarish situation.

I am stuck sailing on the East coast because that is the nearest water to me but I would sail on the south coast out of choice because the sea is not muddy and there are loads of nice marinas to go to.

Paul, you don't know when you are well off. All that lovely mud, all those soft, oozing creeks. The virtual absence of blue flagged snobs (!). The prices. The sunshine. The 4* meals served up by topless waitresses... oh dear, I seem to have drifted off again ;-)

Re: East Coast

Funny - I have friends on East Coast and I talk often about moving my boat around there ...... suits my UK office location as well ....... they throw their hands up and ask me if I am mad !!!! They all troop down to Solent for their boating and can't understand why someone would want to change for Ouze'y mud etc.
