On a whim last year I bought a seawych 19ft trailer sailer on a mooring in north wales. (no thats not the reason I need help but it could be argued)

I have really been hooked by this sailing lark and one day this season I would quite like to take the damn boat off the mooring without hitting someone else / forgetting petrol / dropping my phone in the sea / finding the battery flat / or any other minor mishaps.

Anyway the first few months have given me time to make a long list of things i would l would like to change / repair /replace, and the only sensible way to do this is to get the boat home where work can be carried out without the added expense of lost tools kicked overboard.

so finally i get to the point - I need a trailer - there are a few around but heres what i dont know.

a spec sheet tells me that the boat has a displacement of 727kg if a mark 1 or 864 if a mark 2 how do i find out wich wych i have ?

The spec sheet also tells me that the ballast is 273 or 327kg do i add this to the displacement for the total weight ?

As many trailers seem as though I may have to adapt slightly i need to know the distance between the keels - can anyone let me know?

Thanks in advance - David /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Welcome to the forum
<ul type="square"> [*]1. Join the Seawych Owners Association. [*]2. Register to use the SWOA forum (message board) [/list]
You will then be able to ask all the questions you will have and get answers from the panel of Technnical Advisors.

However for now the centre line of the keels is approx 41" apart but I think you will find that more details are already on the message board as I remember measuring mine carefully for one of the other members a while back.

I think you will find the info regarding the Mk1 and Mk 2 boats is on the website or in the downloadable 93 page Owners Manual which has been compiled for members. If not then a question on the message board will bring answers.

Just to show willing though the displacement (of any boat) is equal to its total weight but does not usually include any gear. I thought 727 Kg was the displacement of Mk2 boats (Mk1s being lighter). I will have to look into that.

Which ever do not scrimp on trailer capacity. I think there may be some trailer details in the owners manual

Vic

Thanks the spec sheet i have is from SWOA so assume im correct in the 864kg MK2 and having read more thoroughly i see the note on colour scheme - mine being red/white I guess its a MK2

As for membership - i did send an enquiry some time before xmas and duly recieved the form etc. I will at some point complete and apply. One small gripe though - why cant I do this online? had that facility been available on the site you would have had me a long time ago.

Thanks again for your help and I look forward to speaking within the SWOA message boards

Yes if it is red and white it is definitely a Mk 2. There were relatively few Mk 1 boats built and they were without doubt all white and grey.

I have not checked on the displacement figures, your are probably right but I have the sales brochure from the time I bought mine and it gives the displacement as 727kg but the ballast as 327 kg.. I would have assumed J. Sadlers literature to be correct but it is not guaranteed. Anyway if you take the higher figure it makes an additional safety margin for the trailer spec if it is wrong. I do not understand why the difference in displacement figures you quote is so much greater than the difference in ballast figures. I had always assumed that the increase in displacment was due entirely to an increase in ballast. The sail area was increased (although it was later decreased vety slightly again I think) which is presumably why the ballast was increased but otherwise there were no changes to the boat itself af far as I know. It is of course very difficult to verify some of these things now.

Regarding the membership issue, shall we say that the membership secretary is of the old school! I have no idea what would be involved in setting up an online joining procedure, but I imagine subscription payment could be a hurdle although it is something of which I know nothing.

There is a committe meeting this weekend I'll email your comments. In the meantime do fill in the form and send it snail mail. I think you will find it worthwhile.
