After months of indecision we have finally put our wonderfully safe and solid Hurley 30 up for sale. I am now faced with trying to decide what to buy to replace her. We have a budget of around £40k and are looking for a cruising yacht with at least 2 separate cabins plus saloon to allow us to put the 3 kids away and still enjoy some space. I want a boat that sails reasonably well and is again fairly solid. So far I have looked at a Moody 36, Scanmar 35, Conway 36 and have seen a couple of boats of less familar marques on Dutch Brokerage sites that seem interesting.

Somebody suggested a Sigma 36, which I have always had down a racing boat rather than a family cruiser, another mate pointed us towards French boats such a Beneteau 35.

We want something that we will be able to use for our usual cruising around the East Coast, France and Holland and subsequently for a 12 month sabatical in about two years time.

This must be a common dilema so what does the gang suggest? Any bright ideas will be gratefully received.

Apart from the lifting keel - you'd pick up a decent Nicholson for that kind of budget.
I assume you are after some decent sailing qualities - there is a nice Westerly 30 odd (perhaps 34)in Glasson just now which has been reduced into the 40's (£K) It seems well equipped and has been well cared for.

Have you considered a catamaran, you would have oodles of space and more with £40k, as a family cruiser would take some beating excuse the pun. Safety for a young family with seperate play areas etc.

Just a thought

www.botenbank.nl gives you for 60K-75K euro (prices should be considered 10% above real price)

-Large, full option but maintenance heavy
1977 Moody 39

If it has been re-engined in the last five years: no brainer. Buy it. now.

-more sporty
1989 Dehler 36 DB
http://www.botenbank.nl/botendetail.asp?id=77665

-Lot's of competition in the Dehler 34top, so cheap. But why are there 4 people trying to sell this boat at the same time. Any probs with this one ? Put it to the forum experts.

I'd go for one of the Dehler 34's, looking at the competition. Make appointments and drive a day to Holland, and compare the boats.

I have sailed a Sigma 362 for the past 8 years. Great performance and plenty of living space, two large double cabins, with the ability to sleep 4 kids or two adults in the saloon as well. The only downside may be the lack of a bathing platform. It is a bit of bugger to get into it from the water.

I have looked at the Bootenbank and other sites from brokers in NL, I have seen the two boats you mention, and a couple of Friendship 35's that also look interesting, (although they are not boats that I have ever seen in the UK and know nothing about, does anybody else know of them?) I am thinking of taking a weekend in Holland to look at a few boats, as the ones I have seen in the UK at my price seem a bit tired.

What do you mean about the prices being 10% lessthan stated? Surely that's the same everywhere, or am I missing something?

Don't know about the UK market, but here , as you mentioned, what the owner advertises as his selling price, is about 10-15% higher than what he really want, you know: an idiot might just turn up to buy your boat at your asking price.
Boats I bought:
Halcyon 23: asking price was 210K, paid 186K
Sirocco 31: Asking price was 700K, paid 585K :)
Prices in BEF

The Botenbank has a historic price list: if you sell a boat, they ask you in a survey how much you actually got for the boat.
http://www.botenbank.nl/koers/default.asp
'Merknaam' is boat brand
"Bouwjaar" is year of build

When you buy/sell in holland, go to the ANWB, they have a standard sales contract for use between non-professionals, costs 50p.
ANWB is the dutch AA+RYA combined

I just sold my Sigma 362 (1988) for £42K. It is a cracking boat and I did the Fastnet in it, amongst other races. Latterly my wife and I cruised two handed. I never felt concerned no matter what the weather threw at us. It does sail as well as the Sigma 36 and on one Round the Island race we crossed the line infront of several Sigma 38s although we started 10 minutes after them. When I pointed this out SWMBO replied "they must be c*** sailors".

I believe there are a lot of people who are asking too much for 362s and you should be able to get a good one for just over the 40K mark. Mine had na new instrument system and auto pilot and the engine had had a recent top overhaul. we only sold the boat because our circumstances changed and we traded up for our retirment boat, long term live aboard, early.

If you want to email me I can give you a list of points to look at in a 362, if you want to sail one I think the Hamble School of Yachting has one which you can charter.

Good luck
