How Thin

Fear not, the amount of editorial pages is the same as it was this time last year it's the adverts that have dissappeared...

The magazine has got thinner in the last 12 months, but the cause is the recession which is affecting the amount of adverts in the magazine, not the editorial, but this isn't unique to YM it's happening across all magazines.

You are still getting almost 90 editorial pages an issue, the same there has been for the past few years. The 88 editorial pages in Nov 09 would be the same whether the magazine has 210 pages or 152.

20 years ago, there between 64-70 editorial pages.

A few years ago there was a thread about how much it would cost to get the adds out of YM, I think I worked it out at about £15 an issue, look on the bright side you're almost getting that now for no extra cost ;)

Yes but . . .

Yes Snooks, but why not put more editorial in to bring the mag up to the same thickness - sales will go up, people will say nice things on here and perhaps the advertisers will return. You could reprint a few more old boat tests, they are always popular.

Are we in danger of seeing paper mags disappear, or will advertising pick up again?

I was given a few old copies of YM and PBO from about 20 years ago. I haven't counted the number of editorial pages, but my impression is that the modern editions use much larger photographs and there seems to be less useful content to read. I expect you will disagree, but that is my impression. And no, I don't think a photo is worth 1000 words necessarily.

Advertising is usually the first way that companies will seek to save money if they have to, it's a quick way of saving cash, although it doesn't always work that way in the long run, but that's another story.

The lack of adds has been down to money saving measures by the companies involved, either by withdrawing their advertising or reducing their add size, and not due to the editorial content.

I don't think we're in any danger of seeing paper mags dissappearing, I personally don't want to take a laptop to the bog with me. Advertising will increase again, it will just take a bit of time

I hope the Nov issue is better than October's.

Oct 09 was a notable bad issue, what was that learning from experience piece about crossing the North Sea? "We set off with a bad forecast, it got a bit bumpy then we arrived.". The average blog entry from Gupta or Morgana is better written and 10 times more entertaining.

Talk about shooting yourselves in the editorial foot in the middle of a recession YM.

Regional news papers in the US are taking a beating from lost ad sales to Google and CraigsList but I think leisure mags on non techno subjects like YM will endure. My copy of YM is a medium term luxury buy that I return to multiple times in a 6 month period, quite unlike a daily local newspaper purchased mainly for scanning classified ads.

Me, neither. And I include the glossy 'YM' in the list of print material that must never see the inside of a toilet - sea, shore or otherwise.

The preference around here is for the Financial Times. Broadsheets are big enuff for - well, even the biggest bums....

....and that includes Moody Owners! :D

Oh great, is the forum tail wagging the editorial dog's body? Please confirm there is not a photo of a melting iceberg anywhere in the November issue?

In the mean time I will begin preparing myself for the low point in the YM year i.e. the new year charter holiday reviews edition.

I must say I am really looking forward to the promised article on 'Choosing an anchor to cope with global warming' :D - W

If so, you'll find that the Rocna anchor is bizarrely missing from the experiment. Oh yes, I get it: the article is borrowed from a sister French publication (nothing wrong with that per se) and the Rocna competes with the virtually identical Spade anchor which is made by a French company - and as usual the French support their own so they skewed the sample of anchors! Lots of other brands were there despite this glaring omission; several you'll never have heard of.

No, this post is not a troll or partisan support for Rocna and it would be a shame if it gets dragged that way. The point is the glaring omission from the sample.

And another thing, what has happened to the A - Z used boat review? I was looking forward to reaching the M's to see what nice things they would say about my boat.

IIRC it's not the first time the boat review has stopped - perhaps next time start with Z. Oh, that's no good, M is in the middle so we won't get there that way either!:D
