Help please!

Right then, two weeks have passed since I went to the show and decided that in light of the fact Moody were discontinuing the '38 I was going to order one. Armed with scuttlebutts invaluable advice, a piece of crumpled paper and half a dozen competitors glossy brochure I email my final list of extras to Moody and wait.....a week goes by and a scutbut mate tells me all the '38's have been, sold so heart in mouth I ring my point of sail (sale oops) about this; nope! They've still got the blue hulled one although some other people are interested, but haven't comitted yet! THANK GOD! So I enthusiastically (Who me? Nah!) I reinstate my case for them prefering me to any other punter because mine will be th best '38 they've ever made (honest!)

First hitch time, they haven't received my email, so I do it again (not a major problem!) In the mean time I'm arranging the necessary finance, berths, chandlery etc. SO last Friday comes (about 4.30 pm) and I get a call on my mobile just as I'm closing in on a mobile blackspot on the motorway.

"Er, Mr O'Brien?"
"Yes, Hello ***** (Name not swearword!) How are you?"
"Fine thanks. We're having a few problems with some of the extras you spec'd"
"Ok what kind of problems?" (Heart begins to sink.)
"Well quite frankly, we've never fitted them to this boat before and they just wont fit!"
"Ok, not a major problem. Just quote me for the ones you can fit."
"Oh, oh ok, I'll get back to you."
"Ok bye."
Booooooooooooooooooo (line dead, bloody mobiles!)

Right it's the weekend, I'm uneasy with Moody's reluctance to quote for anything and I've since been told Moody have other interested parties. I ring them about 1.30 pm today and express my concerns. I'm placated with;
"Ok we'll get the quote off to you today!" Which concerns me even more that they weren't going to do that anyway!!!!

The way I see it is I have several options, which are: (Please forgive the more outlandish ones which may be a complete non starter.)

1. Carry on with the purchase although the extras which I want can't be fitted and by virtue I don't get my dream boat. (The whole point of ordering right now!)

2. Against Moody's recommendation get someone to fit them anyway at a later date. (Don't like this one, obviously Moody have their reasons.)

3. Scrap the whole idea! We're a year earlier then we originally intended anyway. Wait 'til SBS 2003 go and have a look at boats that can have what we want fitted.

4. Go to a bespoke boat builder and get exactly what we want. (Don't know if there is such a thing and if financially viable.)

5. Buy a Sunseeker! (Only Joking!)

Although the content of this post may seem light hearted, it remains a grave concern for me. Ever since the show I have had a nagging doubt that I'm rushing this a little too much (Ironically a pass time which it's intention is to slow down and relax me.) with little knowledge and even less experience.

All replies are appreciated.

Am I just getting pre-boat jitters?

It looks to me as if a touch of realism is creeping into your plans - a very good thing.

What extras couldn't be fitted - if moody hasn't or can't fit them on the boat before, there is a reason -

Your wish list is likely still a little umm enthusiastic - I promise you can happily do without a lot of the stuff you deem neccessary for your dream boat. Start with the bare minimum you need for your first season and retrofit as and when you think these extra bits will serve a purpose.

About the only thing on your list that I thought was important, other than the basic nav aids (radar plotter overlay isn't really basic is it?) and safety gear was the heater. Makes the boat much more comfortable and really helps over winter with damp etc.

BTW how is the GP14 practice coming along?

Thanks for the reply. As for the GP14, it's another source of concern for me. Since my last post (No wind and laughing anglers) and due to the fact that I can only sail it at the weekend. There has either been no wind or I have been dealing with buying the boat, therefore no sailing has taken place and I feel like I'm going backwards rather than forwards. Dayskippers class is going great, really enjoying it though! Weekend after next concentrated weekend on friends Bav 32 though (Can't wait!)

One option I neglected to put in was;

Buy a smaller, cheaper boat (used Bav32 or alike) and use it for a year and sell in a season or so to get what I realy want!

Cheers

Re: I turne me back for 5 minutes

And you're bloody banned

Point one. What you want are extras after all so if you still feel the same way about the boat ( remmeber the one you fell in love with at SBS did not have all these) Then fit what you can.
remember you can have stuff retro fitted.

I would say the seats will not be a prob
keep the nav stuff in an ideal wallet you would have a plotter and a radar and a reflector. I cannot see this being a problem.
I would def go for the heater ( as i read it was the most fought for item during the dismantle) and it does extend your season.

You may have to sacrfice the aircon and genny and watermaker. I would state that for ultimate transat the water maker seems to a be a fave from people i have spoken to. Also from what i have read you can recharge with a genny with less fuel used than running the engine normally.

sounds like moody want shut for no further work. maybe they have more profitabe jobs on the books.

If in doubt. It does sound like you might be able to fashion some sort of propulsion system for the GP14 from all the knicker elastic you seem to be collecting. You can make a canvas cover to sleep under, hey presto the ultimate in cheap cruising.

Beer! Now there's a temporary solution.

There's no reason why you can't retrofit your extras - at least those that will fit - after you've bought your Moody with the basics. Chances are you'll be able to get a better price from heating and electronic specialists for example. That's what I have tended to do with my boats. Moody I suspect are probably rather pricey on the extras. I don't know what they are quoting on heating but Kreuger installed a Eberspacher Airtronic system - outlets in the saloon and in three cabins - for me for about £2K a year or so ago and last winter it really did the business.

I was chatting the other day to a guy at Moody I've known for some time - he sold me a 31 way back in the 1980's - and apparently both the 38 and the 42 are going out of production soon. So the smallest Moody is now the 47. Their plan is to bring in Elans from Slovenia to allow them to address the 30 - 45 foot segment.

Steve , the most important thing to order isn't the extras , it's the boat itself. If you're REALLY sure that this boat is the one and are not rushing into this due to the fact that the boat is being discontinued , then step back , think of what are essential extras , then get off your order. When you take delivery and start sailing , you'll have you're dream boat , and after its first season will be able to assess what other extras you need. As long as you buy the boat with all you need to sail her away , and that's not really that much , you'll have years adding bits and pieces to her.

Think how long the list is going to be once he gets this boat in the water

Leat at least get the obvious ones out the way.
Next season list will be

Ejector seats/ beds for kids
Ice maker in cockpit
Intergated watermaker/ home brew kit
Large LED sign intergated into mast to allow suggestive comments to be made to passing yachts
Auto inflate - wash induced 4 foot high inflatable 2 Finger salute amidships both sides for unruly stinkies

hehehehehehw

You're obviously incapable of negotiating a decent deal, tell them to get stuffed as you're current project will be buying the JOlly Sailor instead, turning it into an all night Karaoke Bar with an al fresco Disco dancing and a laser light show. Main target market being the Sunseekers of the South Coast looking for an evenings entertainment.

Suggest heaps more practice.. especially in dinghy. will give you chance to put some of your day skipper learning into practice.

Far better to be out on the water doing than messing about whether you can squeeze a flip down 15 inch LCD tv in each cabin. (Anyway as a Sony dealer you ought to be able sort those yourself. (Do you deal with Bob Clarke btw?))

That sort of thing is best left to the depths of winter. give you a project or two to keep you busy.

Re: None of the above

I would orgainse some ace charter holidays. Don't like the ide of buying monster-fancy stuff from company who have said up fromt that they don't know what they are doing.

£8k gets a family of four to the carribbean in a 38 footer for 2 weeks over christmas! Then realise that the main thing you need is a 12volt light outdoors, and some extra matches, and a teatowel.

Now sunday morning discovered on our pontoon a Malo 39 that was new in 2001 and happened to be visiting and owned by the parents of our old neighbour from Chichester Yacht Basin. Had a good crawl over it and drooled over it. Must keep buying the lotto tickets!!!!!!!!

Tell Muddy to go forth & multiply

If they can't respond now, what are they going to be like later?

Use the months between now and Earls Court to look very seriously at all sorts of alternatives (Oceanis 411 and 42cc, Vancouver 38 Pilot, Najad 36, HR 36, Grand Soleil 37, Najad 373, Rustler 36 (only joking), Starlight 39, Sweden Yachts 370 and 390, Tartan 3700, Island Packet 380 for starters). Decide what you want. Go to Earl's Court with you chequebook and do a deal. You'll only be 4 months late on your schedule (and four months more experience) and you'll have experience of what other brands that care about the middle section of the market (unlike Muddy) have to offer.
