I am considering buying a boat with a Volvo Penta 5.7 GLi Engine with Duoprop. From the HIN the age of the boat is a 97.

There are two small labels on the top of the engine with the following:

Transom Assembly Mod no 3868413 Ser No T00376393

Drive Unit Mod no ?868441, Ser No T00816838

Can anyone help with age, details and any known problems with this engine and outdrive.

Thanks for the help

Jon

Check if its fresh water cooled . if so then engine should be O.K. Try to get a sea trial so you can check the temps on the manifolds and risers, if its sea water cooled you should be able to keep your hand on them, if they are too hot then they could be getting blocked and you may be faced with replacing them, anywhere between £500 and 1,000 depending on where you buy the parts. Check the power trim and tilt operation, while running trim it out to say 3 degrees positive and watch to see if the numbers stay steady or creep down, if they go down you will be looking at two new trim cylinders c £500.
Also turn the steering from lock to lock at slow speed to hear if there is any knocking or rumbling from the universal joint on the drive and find out when the bellows were last changed, we do them every two years ( cheap insurance!)
If the boat is on land remove the dipstick on the top of the drive and check to see if the oil has water in it, if so its not serious but you will need to replace several oil seals on the drive.
I am not attempting to scare you off as it is a good motor and drive and at that age shouldn't have anything wrong with it. But have personally seen all of these faults on newer boats than the one you are looking at , so just be aware.

good luck Steve

I had the same configuration in my Bayliner. You did'nt mention but I take it its a petrol lump. Like Col says, they are a Chevrolet engine with different stickers on, mine went under the guise of Mercruiser, also like Col says they are good solid engines but can be very juicy.

Cheers

Syd :)

Thanks for the advice.

I am sure the engine is raw water cooled because the engine layout is very similar to my Mercruiser. I'll try the manifold hugging technique - carefully at first.

When we started the engine there was an unusual sound, a bit like a pump with the bearings going. This went away after the engine had been idling for a couple of minutes. The noise returned when the drive was moved about 10 degrees either side of mid-position. Is this acceptable particluarly for a boat that has been moored without use for a couple of months?

If I decide to go ahead and make an offer I'll certainly get a survey but in the meantime I'll continue to look elsewhere.

Thanks

Sounds like the UJ or could be the intermediate shaft, hard to pinpiont without hearing it, but I would always be wary of bearing noise. With the noise disappearing when the drive is moved I would suspect intermediate shaft, UJ's normaly clunk rather than squeak. The shafts always get overlooked by the owners as the grease fittings are hard to get too.

Don't want to cause alarm, but it would be well worth investigating more. Probably teaching granny to suck and all that, but what the hell........

Could also be bearings in the bellhousing. If it is, don't even thing about using it 'till they're fixed- I could show you some horror pics of what happens if they go.Engine out job, I'm afraid.

Hang about, has it got power steering. Could be the pump belt, it was the moving the outdrive 10 degree bit that popped in there. If it is then thats not hard to rectify.......is it! Well it is a volvo.....and a Merc......and......
