our dehumidifier in the house is on it's last legs. So as we're aiming to move to be liveaboards, we may as well replace the unit with one that will be suitable on the boat.

Can anyone suggest a good dehumidifier for a 45ft motor boat please? We'll be located in Scotland for a few years, then moving down to the Med. Will we need a dehumidifier in the Med?

I have never used a dehumidifier in the UK but found one really good for the Med where Autumn and Spring mixtures of cold, damp and then sunny spells can mould up everything really quickly. Worst winter afloat places so far on this have been Corfu and Halkadiki. Maeco Junior has worked well for us with drain down the sink and has the important property of keeping the settings when the power goes down and up.

Thanks for the link - a very interesting read.

The only issue with the test winner is that I think it was found as most useful for an unattended boat. We would be living aboard & the temperature would therefore be hopefully a little warmer.

Makes sense - we leave the boat unattended for 4 or more months during the Winter and frequently for 6 weeks in the Summer. Maybe a compressor one for you then although you might not enjoy the noise.

+1 for the Maeco junior

we have used ours as liveaboards for the past 2 years and it works great draining directly in to the sink...we run it virtually nightly through the winter and often leave it for extended periods (5/6 weeks) unattended.... it works great but we have modified the filters using the Henry hoover bag modification...... the filter issue is well known and as such there is now a newer model available from Maeco which addresses this issue.... either way highly recommended.

We got the one that was best budget buy in the (i think, 2010/11 PBO test) which was the B & Q own brand, it has been used every winter, and every time we need to shower on board since then, first on a 40ft yacht then a 55 ft yacht, winter less effective but draws out a bucket full every couple of days, it is 180 watt version, little heavy but measures around 18 ins high by 8" wide and 6" deep, my bit of advice would be work out where it's stored when not in use as this may limit the choice. The areas we have used it are the North of England (both sides) and Northern France.

another +1 for the Meaco

we've used one 3-4 times a week between October and March for the past 3 winters. Full time living aboard. Move it about depending on need. Sleeping cabin during the day with the mattress lifted. Into the forepeak at night with the hanging wardrobe doors open. Sailorman gave me the tip of ensuring the doors were closed for the first several uses as they will dry the wood and could warp the doors. Most essential bit of kit for liveaboard comfort. And they make heating more efficient/effective.

Meaco jr has a "sister" in the much cheaper Sandstrøm SDH08L15E
-I have no idea if it's sold in the UK, but you can order it from Sweden here:

https://www.elgiganten.se/product/h...ering/SDH08L15E/sandstrom-avfuktare-sdh08l15e

For all purposes it is the same as the Maeco jr. Likely from the same Chinese factory as well.

I have mine now for the third season. I lived aboard during temps down to -14C. It worked perfect then, and is still going strong. If you can get it, I see no reason to pay the extra money for the Maeco jr.

Am I missing something here....the link you give lists the Sandstrom at 1995 krona....this is £175....you can get the Maeco junior on Amazon for £149...

My bad!! My Sandstrøm equals DD8L, not the JR, which is a simpler model.

The Maeco DD8L retails at around £350 here. Twice the prrice of the Sandstrøm.

But if you can get a Maeco JR for £150 incl VAT and delivery, it's a steal. I compare retail prices though.
