If I am to buy a yacht I need to get fit…….how many wheelbarrow loads of logs, going up hill equal putting a reef in the main
It all depends on your age. how big the wheelbarrow size of the logs and how big the sail is. : )If I am to buy a yacht I need to get fit…….how many wheelbarrow loads of logs, going up hill equal putting a reef in the main
Sage advice, yes the getting in the car to drive to a gym seems absolutely stupidA good question. It also hints at a very practical approach, also avoiding expensive gym membership or (God forbid) personal trainers. Personally, there's a few round-the-home activities I've found useful that work on the same upper-body and leg muscles.
e.g.
Log cutting
Carrying bags of compost.
If you get desperate, you could also try press-ups and some running. But not both at the same time.
I live i hope ……..filmed from the sofaWe have been here before intermittent log moving interspersed with bouts of sofa surfing and recuperation won't cut the mustard.
You probably are right but driving into town, buying gym clothes and sports shoes and doing mind numbing excersise(did it once to recover from not being able to walk) puts me offDon’t knock gym work....a scientifically worked out program of exercise shouldn’t be dismissed. Remember, my old old friends, exercising at our age consists of two parts....exercise and rehabilitation. The rehabilitation part is absolutely essential....without it your exercise will soon leave you with injuries and worse than when you started. Gym equipment allows you to work the good muscles and joints while safe guarding the dodgy ones. It also allows you to start the re-education of muscles and joints in a controlled, isolated way and with extremely low weights. It also allows you to gauge your progress. Just saying
First I would suggest that you build up your general stamina by walking, not strolling looking at the flowers and clouds but increasing the pace making your heart do some work and elevating your pulse, it will take some weeks to do it from at a guess a low start point. You could introduce some calisthenics again starting very gently and working upwards to increased duration. You probably are right but driving into town, buying gym clothes and sports shoes and doing mind numbing excersise(did it once to recover from not being able to walk) puts me off

The initial leaving a berth and returning should be enough to get his blood flowing faster. Then raising and lowering the sails on the next occassion. Then combining these two exrcises. Adding trimming the sails in light winds and steering the boat (if he ever buys one!). Sailing a few hundred metres and returning. After repeating a lot of the last group of exercises, he should finally be ready to sail the whole length of the Ria. Fright will then set in as the Atlantic Ocean will look too vast to go any further.Don't mess around ashore. Set the boat up to be easy to handle, you have the experience to know what suits your way of sailing. Then just go sailing. Start with short outings in fine weather and gradually build up to completing a Jester Challenge or whatever your dream is.
