We are off for a weeks traveling and want to use the tv, recharge the laptop and generally use 12volt power on the boat. Does anyone know of a problem in plugging the portable generator into the shorepower socket on the boat?
Some generators (usually the less "clever" ones) produce alternating current which needs "clipping" (cutting off) so that the voltage is not exceeded at the top of the (sin) wave pattern. The resultant trace is like a series of waves with the top cut off flat.
Some electric motors and e.g. laptops, don't like this flattened curve, so maybe there may be problems delivering into the boat's shorepower system and then to 240v motors or even the TV.
A decent generator will produce true sin wave output, though, and that should keep the 240v system happy.
