Pic of my boat Hi, I thought after the recent post about new forum members I would introduce myself and my boat.
My boat is a recent Ebay purchase of £122! She's 18ft long, mahogony clinker on mahogony frames and keel, I say mahogony but more likely Iroko or similar. She does have a grown oak stem and pine interior.
The good news is that the mast, sails, keel, hog, transom, deck beams and the majority of the bent timbers are good, the bad news is that I have to replace all the planks, ply decking, cockpit timbers and stem.
I have given myself a deadline of a year to get her back in the water, since mid July I have trailered her back to a paddock next to my workshop, slid her onto a long, on edge, plank 2ft off the ground and rigged a tarpaulin tent over. Stripped out the interior, laminated up a new curved stem and scarfed it onto the keel, stripped the keel and good timbers of paint and varnish and removed the garboard strakes and next plank on each side.
I have just collected enough Iroko from Hewins timber nr Yeovil, Somerset for the first twelve planks (28 in all), very good price of £24 a cubic ft compared to Timbmets £29 (and you need a trade account with Timbmet!).
Ordered all my nails and roves from Anglia Stainless who were the cheapest by a long shot. (Roves were half the price of Classic Marine.)
A few questions you might be able to help me with,
1. I was told she was built by Trout and Sons of Exmouth in the late 60's, any one recognise her.
2. She originally had a Stuart Turner inboard and still has the shaft and prop fitted, I would like to replace with the same but am unsure how many HP she will need.
3. I am treating all the wood with timber preservative and then plan to prime with aluminium paint, but I am unsure of which undercoat and gloss, I am self employed so have plenty of time to call my own but not a lot of cash so the budget option is always of interest.
4. I plan to fit a bowsprit, any photos of fittings I would need to make would be appreciated.
Any answers to the above or future questions would be appreciated and I would like to thank all the previous contributors to this forum who's posting I have read and found invaluable. [image]http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3310090[/image]
