Fray Bentos - the critic's speak out

The cooker tilted on its gimbals and the second pie slid off the shelf, cleared the door and landed upside down on the floor.

I have done exactly the same thing with an FB pie. Crunchy pie for tea that day.

Never had one since and no intention of doing so. FB pies - work of the devil.

Why does no one ever mention the even more epicurean Snake & Pygmy Pudding?

I find these even more wonderful, although Mrs FC is not a Pygmy lover, so I have to eat a whole one on my own.

FB are vile!

If you want to eat tinned food then M&S and Waitrose do a range of tinned stews and curries which are pretty good. The often do a 3 for 2 offer and we always carry a few for emergencies. Waitrose also do potato Rosti which is also brilliant!

A pie is a pie

A pie is a pie, and therefore right and good in the sight of God, and man shall rule over them and they shall be maketh of the bacon butty (Conjuctivitis verse 4 or Genesis 1:26 if you actully believe that ..... - and if you do, and Creationism and Science can be combined - explain the fossils then, eh? .... And on the 9th day God decided to bugger around making pointless twaddle ,, but I digress). Pies are little bits of perfection and the only problem I have with FB pies, which I love, is that it is difficult to eat them in the way they should be eaten - in their entirety, between 2 slices of 'white bread' (by default, Warburtons medium sliced, to balance health and nutirition, with, er nowt) and the cheapest margarine available. God bless all here ...

Pies

I've just finished an M & S Scottish Steak Pie - more or less perfect, if you can't always have home made, but you do need an oven so maybe not for boats. When combined with a half-decent St Emillion you know that life ain't all bad. BTW never had an FB - should I try?

I can live with FB pies, although their contents are a little short on meat. What I have never really liked are the canned potatoes.

I agree with your assessment of the FB pies, although this doesn't prevent me stocking them for emergency rations. But tinned potatoes I find very handy, and have been known to open one despite having the real thing on hand, simply cos I CBA to boil them. Bit of salt and eat them cold - go with anything.

Yes.:D
Breaded Cod, Chips, HP Sauce, Mugs of Tea.
Tannoy in the background...
Banter and laughter in the mess....:D

Shore Patrol, Hemp Hawsers, Ratguards, Smell of Tar, Fresh Paint, Grey Gangways, Pipes, Bunting, Jolly Boats, OIl and Tar....:D

Wrens !!!!

(I love the Wrens, hoo doesn't)

Nearly all gone, sadly...:(

Actually strikes me as rather reminiscent of a voyage on Stavros. Can tick most of 'em.

No wrens though.

Are you quoting from our boat? We have exactly the same combination as emergency rations on Serendipity except for the potato Rosti which we will now try!

There are all sorts of things on the internet - and I was idly wasting a few moments surfing when I cam across some reports on The FB pies which are so beloved of some on these forums. I like to go sailing with my family - and I know that if I suggested for a nano-second that FB pies were going to be on the menu then I would be eating and sailing by myself in the future. The report can speak for itself:

I reckon that Paddy has got it bang to rights with one exception. " Don’t trust people from Yorkshire " is simply wrong. But then as a furriner, he has probably mistaken a Lancashire accent for a Yorkshire one ( surprising but can happen) in which case he's right.
