Now I have seen it all. A sailing cruiser leaving a south coast harbour and on HER ENSIGN STAFF AFT A ST GEORGE'S CROSS FLAG.
Were the crew intoxicated? Or defiant? Or merely ignorant?
The last possibility is worrying as they may be deficient in other aspects of seamanship.

Think the later, problem is that it's a flag pole, so people fly a flag, why it should be an ensign is totaly lost on them.

In Cornwall there is more and more boats flying the cross of St Piron, or with a Union Jack in the corner if they feel guilty.

Re. Twisted Knickers

Hear hear . . .

The idea that flying a St. George's flag means you are a menace to other seafarers is fairly absurd is it not? If you are into flag ettiquette then fine, why not? I like to fly an ensign when on board, but always forget to take it in at night - no doubt causing apoplexy to people like Deckmaster (and for fun you can't beat dipping it when a Navy ship goes past . . .)

However, I think we must face up to the fact that it is possible to voyage in a seamanlike fashion while utterly ignoring FE - I'm more worried about people who know everything about flag etiquette but might be lacking in that other seamanly requisite, a sense of perspective.

Re: Re. Twisted Knickers

I do find Flag Etiquette and flags quite an interesting subject.

And I have my own flagpole at home, today flying the Cornish flag .........cos I like Cornwall

I take the ensign down every evening 'cos it makes them last twice as long!

Its hopeless, I fear

I agree with you; a lack of respect for your own nation's symbols (which is what this amounts to) is unlikely to run hand in hand with courtesy towards others, good manners or good seamanship.

Come to think of it, there is rather less good manners and good seamanship about, anyway...

Re: Re. Twisted Knickers

I went to Cornwall once, liked it a lot, great place. I now live in California, but I am known to fly (wear) the St George cross ( I was born in Wickham Hants.), nobody knows what it is here. So I have fun with it. Why don't we stop all this bullshit.

Unfortunate but understandable

It is a natural reaction I think to events that are happening in the UK.
The more people you talk to the more it comes over that certain people in government feel that the UK is finished and should should just be made of european 'States'
I hate the idea of sailing being drawn into this but it is probably the only 'flagpole' that many people have to make their views known. This was demonstrated by the recent football World Cup and I notice that many flags are still left up.

Personally, I feel that we should leave the Red Duster where it should be and fly anything else - as big as you like from the cross trees.

Well, well. The old flag post raises it ugly head agian. I for one like to wear my red ensign, it's just the way I am, thats the ensign I should wear, but I admit I tend to leave it up at night, most of the time, I'm in the pub or somewhere when it's time to take it down and after all the reason it's taken down at night, is because some tight bastard realised it would last three time longer (Samuel Pepys wasn't it) Anyway I don't really care, after all I have the forum burgee, flying at my stem jack! and the Scotland royal standard at my crosstrees! on a boat called "Englander" theres' got to be something for some pillock to complain about surely, I don't like people wearing a blue ensign abroad, or a EU flag with a union flag in the corner, but say anything, nah.. I think not!

Plaese dont stop this bullshit. To me, not being English, its one of the most hilarious readings on the BB.
Keep it going every now and then.

Happy sailing, Steffen

There is a Cornish Engsign, it's a defaced cross of St Piron, with the Cornish coat of arms a shield with 15 gold circles on (bottom right) and a union flag in the top left corner

It has an official warrant and a legal engsign, maybe more counties should take pride in their indentity...afterall clubs have their own engsigns be them defaced, red, blue, or white :)

This "Ensign" can it be worn by a british regitered ship, like the red, or only a cornish registered ship or one based in cornwall, or do you have to be a cornishman and what is a cornishman, how long do you have to live there and what is the naturalisation period, like the sound of having my own county ensign, maybe a lancashire one with defaced red rose and crossed black puddings!

There is no naturalisation period.. you 'as t'be born it.. *g*

Like the black pudding idea though... but shouldn't it be under "whippets rampant"?

and the motto "eyup trouble t' mill"

Want to know where to buy cornish ensign and if you're off Portugal and the local mafioso water cops stop you, how can you prove its official?

Regards,

Nick
