If you want one you could try local chandleries like the bosun's Locker in Falmouth (01326) 312212, I don't think they do mailorder, but with modern technology like electricity, credit cards and telephones there should be no reason why you can't get one...

Failing that you could put Falmouth into your summer itinery, great pubs, great pasties, tho for a cream tea I'd go to St Mawes, sit outside the Castle hotel and bask in the sun...Moor on The Custom House Quay (Town Quay) 5 min walk, or you could approach by dinghy (Fish Strand Quay) look for the figurehead

As for Portugal you could always pop yer old red one back in!!...If you're at sea I think you can get away without wearing one, you only need one when entering or leaving port, in coastal waters or in the vicinity of another vessel...cunning plan

:)

Gayle Louise is still too poorly for that kind of trip... Actually not so much poorly, but lacking in things like depthfinders, water, somewhere to sleep.. (though that is being rectified tomorrow!

True, true, when asked if I knew anything about horizontal drilling, I answered "I've done all my drilling horizontally"

*g* Well you don't have to drive down the local lanes following a family of 5 dragging a caravan (probably a prize won on Bullseye) from Wakefield, who decided it would be a very good idea to squeeze down a single track road that gets too narrow for the 'van to pass, with no hope of reversing it back and no where to turn round. Then having to assist the idiots unhitching the damned thing, pushing it by hand to a gateway, open gate, keep cows from escaping, get yelled at by farmer, explain that caravan is not camping, just turning cos bone head northerner doesn't know what narrow lane means, enlist help of farmer, push van into field,, turn round northerner's brand new jeep, listen to kids/mother whinge about "cow poo" in the field, push caravan out of field, hitch it up, squeeze past bloody caravan, rip clothes on brambles, reverse half a mile along with two other cars to a fork in the road, send Wakefield man and sproggs back to main road, then to carry on back up lane home about an hour and a half late. and yes this is a true story.. (cept for the caravan being a prize from Bullseye.. I think it was that snooker programme thingy)

*g*

Anyway my burgee is safe and sound and no one would touch it after it did wonderful duty as a handkerchief last time I had a cold.. *g*

no the kids said "Eeww it smells of cow poo." I just wanted to push 'em head first into the stuff.. Course as I reach my mid thirties I am turning into a cranky old man.

Yelled at some kids yesterday climbing all over a fleet supply vessel moored up where Gayle Louise used to be at the quay, with them jumping off the top some thirty feet into the water. I wanted to tell 'em what gets pumped into that water but didn't *g*

Re: Please dont

Squirming yourself into an other thread again are you? -;)

The weekend on the IJselmeer (actually it is Markermeer) was fantastic: Saterday light to no wind, got to Lelystad, just across from base and dropped the hook for the night.
Sunday close hauled to Enkhuizen in 2-3 wind and down home on the spinaker. Great fun.

As far as the ssb set: no luck yet. As long as i keep both on different power sources all is OK. Asa i have both on one battery i still have the interference even with the volume control on zero.
Found out that the local/distant button is great help in that it cancels all the random signals and lets the strong ones through. rtty and fax are very tolerant to the interference.

Finally, yesterday i managed to blow the powersupply of my radio by a wrong power connection. Have to remedy that first tonight.

Happy sailing, Steffen

Flag et again, but worse:reply to all

No one had their k-in-a-t. Deckmaster just reported what he or she had seen and raised possible explanations. Deckmaster thought this might be of interest to contributors and this was correct for there were 21 replies within 24 hours and at this writing there appear to be 34!
Deckmaster was around Falmouth and Fowey very recently and sighted many Cornish flags. He or she had no problem with these, indeed they reminded him or her of similar flags in Bretagne. There was no problm because none was on an ensign staff.
One of the primary points made in the original message was the use the ensign staff (aft): here for British ships and those of a number of British overseas territories the Red Ensign is flown (or an authorized variation, blue defaced etc). This is allowed as a privilege and an honour.
St George's Cross is always illegal afloat, except when properly used by RN. If seen on a spreader or jackstaff, it simply signals the ignorance of the owner; but on an ensign staff it is - well - beyond the pale.
As for Scottish, Welsh, regional etc symbols, they are not a problem on a spreader.

While leafing through some old magazines destined for this weeks waste paper collection I found a sort article on flag etiquette (PBO 367, July 1997).
The main points are that British registered vessels (full or SSR) are required to fly a British Ensign when entering or leaving harbour, in foreign territorial waters in daylight, or in a foreign port until sunset. The corect position is from the taffrail although in certain circumstances other positions are permissible eg the mizzen mast of ketches or yawls.
Welsh dragons, St. Andrews or George crosses etc are not national ensigns and must not be flown from the taffrail nor in any position superior to to any national flag. A red cross on a white background is used by the RN to denote a four star Admirals flagship.
The relevent laws are laid down in the Merchant Shipping Act of 1894 which calls for fines up to £500 for flag offences and may be enforced by Customs Officers, Commissioned Officers in HM forces and by the Police.
A follow on article in the August magazine deals with special ensigns, courtesy flags, burgees and house flags. Of particular note here is that some countries treat courtesy flags very seriously, failure to fly one attracting very large fines or even lengthy spells in jail.
So if you think all this flag etiquette is just a load of nonsense avoid C&E officers, Admirals, policemen and Saudi Arabia!

As long as it's the port spreader, I believe, but blue or defaced blue are not meant to be worn outside british waters, I heard, may not be right, but worth checking, just as information. I'm still proud to be entitled to wear a red ensign and will continue to do so.
