Re: Flag et again, but worse:reply to all

I have this stick stuck into this ss thingy at the end of my boat to accomodate the Dutch national colors.
Does that qualify as an ensign staff?

Thank the lord we dutch have only one national flag (and dont give me any on history and seafaring tradition or i'll have to remind you of Chatham again -:) )

The cross of St. George is also permitted for registered Dunkirk Little Ships. I wonder if it was me leaving port!!

Seem to remember a polite circular to yacht clubs and marinas from the Secretary of the Dunkirk Little Ships Association asking others not to fly the Cross of St George - which rather many people seem to have ignored.

Dutch flags

Sorry to disagree, but I see a greater range of Dutch flags than I do in UK. Other than the usual red/white/blue one, as big as the mainsail and usually trailing in the water, there is the European daisy chain with a Dutch flag in the corner, all white with Dutch in corner like a white ensign, like this but with the white divided into four by a red cross, white ensign type but defaced by some sort of shield-like badge. Pale blue with Dutch flag in the corner. Same but defaced with a badge. On top of that many people use their regional flag as an ensign, e.g. Zeeland, Noord Brabant, Friesland, etc. Not long ago in Middelburg I saw a Dutch yacht with a Union Jack, not red ensign, as its flag (trailing in the water) I didn't have the nerve to ask them what the hell they were doing.

Re: Dutch flags

I.ve seen the same and not just in Holland, the dutch are quite famous for it in the med, with all kinds of flags flying, dependant on who is onboard at the time, (guests) but mostly the regional flags, Friesland etc. and the european bullshit thing! Which you see flying from german and belgian boats aswell, but rarely if ever from a french boat. Why do people think it funny/amusing, that we as a nation, mostly, feel proud to wear our red ensign, I've said before and will remain proud to wear my red ensign on my ensign staff or mizzen, (when sailing, it gets in the way of the boom and gets ripped) I've had enough of this crap anyway, so will keep my big mouth (or fingers in this case) shut! All IMHO of course.

Re: Dutch flags

Sure, one way you are right but then again niot.
Yes, the dutch show a great number of different flags (rags?) one of them the European (which i thouroughly dislike), but there is only one dutch flag used on lands and with the navy and commercial ships alike.
There are some special navy, airforce and army flags but those may not be used privately.
I agree we dutch do not value our national flag as the English do hence our usual amusement at your debates on this subject.

There, now you have done it. You've drawn me into a serious discussion on this subject-:)

Once in Oude Tonge...

,,, I found a coolish welcome in the first bar I came to.
It seems that the day before the town (and bar) was visited by a charter boat of people who spoke English. Turned out that they were German, sailing incogneto as it were, in a vain attempt to avoid remarks of the "When will you bring our bikes back?" variety,,,,,,,
Didn't work for long. ;) but the locals thought I might be another one...
A beer or two sorted it all out. Turned out to be a good night,,,,,,,,,,

Dutch misconceptions

Steffen may be from the Netherlands, but he plainly knows little about his country's flags. Apart from 'local illegals' (no further comment), the Royal Netherlands Yacht Club has a defaced ensign. Other specific yacht clubs have special ensigns, mainly the Dutch tricolour as a swallowtail overlaid with the club badge or its variation. A number of other countries apart from the British, contrary to widely held beliefs, have special ensigns for certain yacht clubs.
But please! The thread was about St George's Cross............

Re: Once in Oude Tonge...

It depends...
I'm told that domestic duties come first this year, but if the wind serves then who knows? It wouldn't be the first time that a trip from Heybridge "towards" somewhere else ended in Holland. :) It only needs a day of fair winds,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
