I think there is a major lesson there for taking fire precautions on board very seriously. That thick black choking smoke is a killer.

One of our friends lost his boat. I have just got off the phone to him.

He had a really well set up £120,000 MoBo almost ready to launch, spent loads of money this year getting ready to spend most of the Summer at anchor. We had been talking about cruising in company to the islands and up the Guadiana when we got back and now all that is left of his boat is the anchor. He is the only real sailor I have met with a MoBo, really good guy and an excellent seaman.

Seems the boat that caught fire had some dodgy mechanic working on it. The fuel tanks went up, there was a howling wind blowing straight towards my friend's boat, and he had literally seconds to jump off and stand and watch as his boat burnt to the ground.

Utter tragedy, and even if the insurance eventually comes good an end to sailing this year for him and his partner. I am devastated for them.

What happens now, who claims from whom? Does the (presumably) insured boat's insurers on which the fire started pay out for the lot or, does it follow on down the line, each claiming from the one who set fire to his?
Assuming they are all insured !

Or is any claim made to be against the boatyard? That's who should be ensuring that work is carried out safely and it's who the other owners of lost boats are contracted with for storage etc. Or is it the mechanic who should have his own company insurance? It's Portugal and it could be messy and a long drawn out settlement process. I hope not for the owners involved.

That's absolutely awful. Really sorry for him.

Nave Pegos (Bruce's yard) require third party insurance when in yard but I know of couple of boats which don't have any insurance. We're free to do any work ourselves including welding but, outside contractors have to be approved and have insurance. Standard exclusion/term in yard agreement that boats are here at our own risk and yard have no liability for damage.

I've just been talking to a chap who bought one of my boats - she 's still in themarina but he has a mobo in the yard slightly damaged. He says that the insurance companies will confer and their descisions are awaited.
