Experienced crew wanted Preston-Brighton 10/5/14 ish

Thats ok but the appeal could change after a viewing of the boat, ships whore, cabin boy or a conversation with the owner. There are many people on here who are no doubt different on a faceless forum as opposed to a face to face over beer or coffee. A post on here is meaningless and no judgement can possibly be made without further info. The person could be a lottery winner and might not want to give any hint to the thousands of scroungers and hangers on that would be chasing for freebes. Nobody knows based on this thread

Of course. I just think that the OP might save himself time, and get more suitable applicants, if he was a bit more specific about what he's looking for, and a little less defensive and inconsistent in his postings.

Well, if that were true, I'm sorry to dissapoint the OP but he has already posted enough to make himself traceable to any amateur slueth within 24 hours!

No doubt that someone else contemplating such a trip would start another thread but really there is no need to, all the major pitfalls are here so Troll or not the info is good.

Experience varies. I have sailed for years but it's all been day sailing, never out of sight of land, I'm no novice but I would think long and hard about setting off from Angelsey to Lands End and onwards.

Having said that I have done several passages that seemed a bit scarey in the planning phase but turned out OK. The warm fluffy feeling from those was quite good.

So I'm a novice and have substantial experience.

...... Its oly 70+ years since thousands of 18 years olds were fighting across the world with no experience with and just a few weeks basic traning and no gps, ais, radar, mobile teliphons and some engins that needed a bulb heating with a blowlamp befor they would start . ...
Not a good analogy. Millions of them died in the attempt.

let us all hope that the OP gets it together and arrives at Brighton. Beware the entrance is very dodgy in a southerly blow all the more so as it appears to be silting up and narrowing and there are construction works on the western side adj. to the former Lifeboat station and there may be construction barges at work. I shall be around at the marina the weekend of the 10/11th may and I will report back.

So far he's been warned off the whole of Cornwall, Brighton, the whole of Anglesey (even though Holyhead is a massive harbour where the only main cock up is taking a shortcut through the Skerries), and the entire Irish sea.

Maybe he should go the north way around?

You forgot the two big wind farms off Prestatyn & the Wirral, posters from the south coast have warned me that these are dangerous places. :D

We could also recommend Ann Davis' 1950's book "Last Voyage" where she & her husband attempted a similar voyage in a wooden MFV & failed to complete the trip. I won't tell you how it all ended, but Ann survived to write the book & sail across the Atlantic alone in a 25' sailing boat "Felicity Anne".

Interesting that you should mention Brighton Marina entrance. In the light of advice on this thread to just get out there and do it never mind the theory or experience, anyone sailing or motoring into Brighton for the first time should be aware that people have died in that entrance in strong Southerlies. They probably arrived at Brighton with the same attitude. It'll be alright on the night may work in show business but it doesn't work at sea.

My main concern would be the fixed window assigned to the trip, the weather may not play ball and there's an awfie lot of bits of lonely unforgiving sea in the passage

Wrong bear!! That's Pooh!

This is Paddington

ahhh sorry about that stuck in harbour eating marmalade sandwiches quite peasant though it may be still doesnt appeal

well its what i was trying to convey. The trip to brighton can be done several ways the simplest being a series of coastal hops all could be done in daylight, but persons on here are tooth suckers, ohh ahh there be dragons itle be the death of anyone who attemps. In the first instance its just about meeting someone for a coffee, beer and then making a judgement.the soothsaying experienced , seem to be afraid of the meeting someone off the net and having a look round a boat as if its going to kill them.
