A friend is looking at re-enginening an early Elizabethan 29. There is no engine in her at moment and he does not know what it was except that it was diesel. It looks as though the new engines such as beta and yanmar will not fit without major alterations to the beds. Any info would be very welcome.

Had this problem, but I did know what the earlier engine was.I obtained a drawing of the earlier engine and made a scale cut out of it. I paid particular attention to the mount positions. I then got drawings of Nanni, Yanmar, Beta, Bukh and Volvo and made similar cutouts to the same scale. I then superimposed cut outs on the original engines profile, noting length and position to shaft, mount position, height, width ( by dimension, not cut out) and projection forward into the saloon. This ruled out all but 2. I rejected 1 on grounds of ease of access to maintenance items and so selected one. I had it fitted professionally. Because of my preplanning very little modification was necessary to the mountings. The engineer welded up sections to bolt on the old bearings with mount positions at the correct place for the new engine. We had more trouble with the exhaust which was a wider diameter than the old engine and on the other side. A right"b*****r to fit!
I suggest you measure your space, make a similar cut out, paying particular note of the height of the bearers and the mount positions, the location and height of the shaft and the length of the compartment, then compare suitable engines by the above method. Hope this helps!

Mine as a Vetus M204 which would have fitted perfectly had the stern gear been properly lined up.

Access is very poor though so I wouldn't recommend it. Try and find one with everything at the front.

Used this approach when replacing a defunct Volvo MD2B with Yanmar 3GM30F. The original engine is not likely to have been very powerful, so it is likely that many of the modern options will be smaller for similar output. It may be possible to get a more powerful engine into the same volume, though that could introduce issues with shaft and prop sizes. For my tupennyworth, try to avoid a single cyclinder engine, a two cyclinder one is much smoother.

Regards, Jeff.
