Can anyone explain in simple terms the meaning of EC RCD Categories A, B, C etc?

The categories define, based on the ECD requirements, what type of area the boat is suitable for. A stands for Ocean, B for Offshore, C for coastal etc. The requirements are very subjective and I would not sail outside the Baltic sea - in your case the Solent and close to the coast - in anything but an "A".

Think it came in 1.1.97, along with HIN numbers.

Bit harsh about some of the B's are you not(?) - but the variation within B specifically is quite staggering; so I sort of agree...
