I am going through this at the moment. Pontoon broke during a storm in the marina and my own boat was severely damaged. My insurance broker, YYachts, stepped in and had a local surveyor there within 24 hours for initial inspection. A further inspection was done after boat was removed from water. My claim is through my insurance company. They can argue later on who will pay the final bill, as I believe they are pursuing the marinas insurer. Your insurance broker/company should be very much hands on guiding you through this difficult process. Insurance is there to pay for the mishaps that occur. The surveyor works on behalf of the insurance company and yourself there report is based on what they see and believe has happened you also have an input to this. Nobody knows your boat better than you. He does not try to cut corners and save them some money here and there. His report is shared by all interested parties. You can also appoint your own surveyor this will cost you. YYachts insurance has been excellent and up till now I cannot praise them enough. Going forward when it comes to repair yard may I recommend Desty marine, I appointed them even though my boat is berthed on the Clyde.

This is the right thing to do. Y Insurance is a very good firm. The boss Barrie Sullivan knows marine insurance well and is a gentleman who plays fair to his policyholders. His "do the right thing" culture is seen throughout the company.

Your description of the status of the surveyor and his report isn't exactly correct imho but no worries on that small point
