Crossed anchor advice - Fiskardo

Whats all the fuss, get one of these and move on
http://www.cspray.co.uk/anchor_hook.html

I would NEVER carry one! I have TWO and always have had. One for use from my foredeck and the other to take out in the dinghy to others in trouble.

There is though often difficulty in getting the offending vessel to slacken his chain sufficiently to allow us to get free and we often end up lifting his anchor right out.

Thanks - was looking for one of those - just ordered. Now I have got one, I will never have a crossed anchor again!

Spoke to soon!

A friggin froggy on an ovni has just picked up our anchor - we had to run bloody miles to get back to the boat- and dumped it 5 boats down just in front of the bows of the stern to boats. We got there just before the stern started grinding on the concrete.

The Sh!Thead did not even have the courtesy to warn anyone or apologies. Just wait till I get my hands round his scrawny neck.

That makes 5 times this year - and ALL french........

One, in a 60 footer steamed off with our anchor attached to his. I have never seen 50 meters of chain bar taught out of the water! We had warned him that he had laid his chain across ups! He came back in his dinghy to apologize though. I dont know how the foredeck stood it let alone the winch

Such has always been the geographic burden of our race!

I will not bore you with the reading of my logs over the past 40 years!

This is my chain lifting shoe.

Some old horseshoe, works fine, is not really yachty.

Btw. I visited the Spetses classic yacht race last week. There I witnessed the biggest anchor spaghetti ever. Lots and lots of classic boats in the harbour and on top of that some mega super mobo´s who just don’t give a dime because they own the place. ( Or could buy it )

Saw an interesting way to clear crossed chains. Done by some old Greek salts used to Spetses harbour. I try to explain:

The boat with the chain on top has to be ready to take the tension of the chain. Then the underlying chain boat motors with a lot of power to above his own anchor. He lifts his chain, the fold of his chain taking the upper chain with it. Some power is needed to take the upper chain ( In this case wrist thick ) with it. With a bit of luck the upper chain will just slide of the anchor. Does not function with fishermen’s anchors. Most modern anchors will just glide from under the upper chain.

There may a critical typo in your otherwise accurate account. If not, sincere apologies!

What baffles me is why any of you go to Fiskardo in high season. I started avoiding it years ago. The combination of the fresh afternoon cross breeze with the inevitable crowding and associated prices always led me to sail straight past the place.

We were there again for the last couple of days. I do like the place. Got a nice spot in the north west corner, useful having a shallow draft. Unfortunately, there was an uncomfortable swell coming in this morning so we ended up leaving reasonably early.

The place was packed last night, with 5 different flotillas moored up all over the place.

What is even more baffling is the number of yachts that go there for shelter from a SE gale in the autumn. It may be because Rod the God calls it a grade A port - all round shelter - which it most certainly is not!

It's just such a scienic place though, isn't it? Ionian equivalent to Kastellorizon or Yarmouth IoW!

some ARROGANT aTHENS MAFFIOSI INSISTED THAT I USE THAT METHOD TO DRAG THE CHAIN OF MY 44FT YACHT FROM UNDERNEATH THOSE OF HIS 70FT MOTORYACHT IN Aegina LAST YEAR BUT HE REFUSED TO SLACKEN HIS CHAINs FIRST. PP EVENTUALLY SORTED HIM OUT.

Sorry about the preceding being in the wrong case but this Microsoft wireless keyboard has no "caps Lock" indicator.

Speaking of big mobo mentality;

Last year we were moored bows to a town quay. I had a Northill anchor out at the stern with 5 meters of chain and rope. I used a real short scope, knowing that big mobo´s moor on the 90° harbour wall from time to time and that way cross chains.
Although that 90° quay is just for small fishing boats, some of these “ Fishers” earn easy money by just occupying that wall. The Spetses harbour is known to be very busy, so the big mobo owners or captains knowing the place phone to one of these occupiers a few minutes before arriving, then two fishing boats go in second row and bingo, one perfect mooring space on the best spot of the harbour opens. Seconds later the big sea castle drops his anchor(s).
I had seen the same mobo doing that trick for three days, as soon as he left for a quick dash the place was filled in again by the “Whore” fishing boats. So far so good, these so called fishermen earn a lot more money saving the place than go fishing. Why not, their life is hard enough.
I wanted to leave, was waiting for the turn of the wind ( Mostly at 11h ) When the sea breeze came I cast off the bowline and started pulling in the stern anchor line. With just the anchor and chain on the bottom I climbed in my dingy to go and retrieve a rock anchor that I had used on the bow.
While I was away the mobo arrived. The owner was at the commands, the captain besides him to interfere if necessary.
The owner started his mooring approach even with my boat in his path. He was so pi**ed off that a normal mortal dared to block his path that he deliberately passed inches behind my boat laying his wrist thick chain in a curve over mine. I was just climbing back on board, asked to wait a second, was granted an extreme rude gesture from the guy.
Well, he sure had taught me a lesson.
15 Years of Med, summer and winter, I had my share of crossed chains. Normally I make no fuss about it, know some tricks. This time, Mr important did it deliberately and insulted me and my wife while doing it.
In my eyes inheriting a fortune makes you no better than the other guy who had to earn his little sailing boat the hard way. I don’t believe in Übermenschen.

We had to lower the bow anchor, then using our dingy to take the stern anchor rope under the bow of the castle, passing the rope under his chain and so retrieving the Northill.
This whole thing was witnessed by a lot of real fishermen, but by their behavior I realized the mobo owner had to be some sort of Spetses god.
He was not a god in Poros where I met the bloke on the street a few weeks later. I had spotted his Dutch flagged gin palace on the town quay and just waited for him to go on land without his servants.
Pretty sure he is not going to do his trick again.
For my wife Spetses is a nono since then. Not for me, with the wife at home, I saw my chance. Last week I moored at the same spot to see the Spetses Classic race.
Hoped to meet Mr Wallet. He must have been warned, did not show.

You will understand that I can´t be more specific on an open forum.

Long ago I served two years as navy military police. Learned a thing or two how to take out an angry drunk sailor. No traces.
Been a liveaboard cruiser makes us almost untouchable, a bit like gypsy’s. They disappear also if the ground gets to hot. One difference however, gipsy s act and take action in big groups, I am alone.
Writing this down here shows I feel no regret haven taken action myself against that old git.
It was not the chain but the disrespect. Even to his captain and deckhands he was so rude, so arrogant that I feel he deserved a lesson.

Eggs cook quicky on hot decks it could be observed? The type of bird making the deposit might not be easily identified?
Of course wild birds do not have date stamped eggs, which makes it hard to trace the avian concerned?
