I am trying to buy stuff with my Credit and Debit cards

A sign pops up saying "We’ve sent your one-time verification code by text message to your mobile phone.", but I don't have a mobile phone .... and it seems as if I cannot use my Credit or Debit card without this one-time verification code

This is happening a lot with online buying now. As per colind3782 you must have a phone number listed with the card provider. I've never had the option about receiving an email, and emails can be slow compared with a text message on a phone.

I may have a phone number listed with the card provider, but they want a mobile phone to send a text, and I don't have a mobile phone

Barclays use a System that you can have a number put up on the screen , that you type into gadget they send you, which you put your card into, type in the on screen number that generates another number and you type that back onto the computer to order.
SWMBO has a card from a different bank they phone the house line with a voice number.

They will also send to a landline number. Some of my card providers have both my numbers and I normally get an option as to which. Do they have your correct landline number ?
I have a hearing problem, which is one reason I do no have a mobile phone (Yes I know I could text if I had a mobile phone) and I cannot take landline telephone calls for the same reasons

All the card providers have been heavily advertising this two stage verrification over the last 6months to users.

Have you spoken to your card provider? Usually the best first step.

As wot JMUK said, who can type faster. :giggle:

Earlier I wrote to Barclays, and I have just received their useless reply ;-

we closed our secure messaging service on the 31st of March. You can still download old messages but you won?t be able to reply or start any new ones. We?re working on a new chat service in Online Banking and we?ll let you know when it?s live. If the option to reply is available for you, please be aware that any response will not be picked up.

We are currently unable to respond to your message and we are sorry for this. If you still need us, you can use Chat in the Barclays app ? it?s easy to use, just tap ?Chat? under the ?Contact Us? section on the home screen and you?ll be connected. You don?t need to stay in the app to keep the chat open ? if you leave, we?ll send you a message when we reply.

I fully understand why there is this added security device of texting a code, but it does at times irritate me as I usually find that I have left my mobile in the car, or put it down somewhere and have to look for it, I am not one of those who seem to be permanently attached to their mobile, it’s there for occasional use only.

It's always struck me as odd that the card companies will send a verification text to my mobile phone, which might have been stolen by someone who is now trying to use my credit card.

I therefore have a very small, cheap "dumb" phone, which I use solely for receiving verification texts.

Whilst the chance of my main phone being lost or stolen, and the banking apps accessed, is fairly small, the chance of it happening to both phones is pretty much zero.

Another alternative is that your account has been entered and the 'other' person has supplied a mobile number which would enable them to easily obtain funds...... talk to the bank (security)as they seem to think they have a mobile number belonging to you...!

The phone apps usually insist you have security set up on the phone so if the phone is stolen someone can't unlock it. You also shouldn't have text messages display on the lock screen. It's one of the most secure systems banking has come up with so far, and has the distinct advantage than most of society find it incredibly easy to use, so it's actually quite effective. Naturally, there are a small number of people who for whatever reason have decided not to get a smartphone, and unfortunately life is going to continue to get harder for those people as more things move in this direction. The government is hell bent on moving to a cashless society too (for tracking purposes) and when that happens you'll be pretty much unable to participate in society without a mobile phone.

Just buy a simple pay as you go phone from Tesco with £10 on it and use that. No need to speak or listen on it, just receive and send texts. Make sure you use it to send from time to time to keep it active. Alternatively switch to NatWest Visa for example or Barcleaycard, both of which use card readers for verification

True, but I've read of cases where people have been mugged, and their attacker has forced them to unlock their phone with the fingerprint button.
