All the banking systems I use have a separate internal app which they now seem to favour over verification by text (Barclaycard does, for instance). That might be a solution that you could set up on an iPad or other tablet.

True, but I've read of cases where people have been mugged, and their attacker has forced them to unlock their phone with the fingerprint button.
If you're being mugged you'll be having a bad day regardless, additional security on a mobile phone doesn't change that whatsoever. It does, however, protect you from every other situation where your life isn't being threatened, such as losing your wallet, having your wallet and phone stolen when not being mugged, the list goes on.

Nobody would be daft enough to keep their credit & debit cards in their phone case - would they?

I have a hearing problem, which is one reason I do no have a mobile phone (Yes I know I could text if I had a mobile phone) and I cannot take landline telephone calls for the same reasons
Possibly the best way is a simple cheap phone as mentioned elsewhere that can receive texts. I believe that you can inform banks that you have a hearing problem and contact must be via texts only, etc. Personally, whilst I have card readers to login to banking, etc, I have never used them for verification of purchases.

So you are trying to get to grips with 2FA? (Two Factor Authentication.)
Then you wont want to hear that many things have now moved to 3 FA !
So for example you have to not only respond with the text message code number but also enter a registered fingerprint or iris scan.
Its a complete PITA even when you are tech savvy and up to date with software and devices.
I seriously worry about the disenfranchisement of our older and less able folk who will either not be able to participate or in the case of many older people will have to hand over control over their finances to someone like a family member or caregiver who may turn out to be less trustworthy than they should...

Given that this is generally for online transactions, how would you propose being secure so that you but ultimately the bank and all other customers are not scammed and end up paying?

Unfortunately scammers and crooks are pushing the need for this and we as users of the services provided need to adapt.

The alternative is F2F cash transactions which in themselves are not always safe...

Most of my online ordering is done on my pc at home. Whilst it has a basic camera for 'meetings' I doubt that it is good enough for an iris scan and fingerprint is a non starter I believe. Technology is leaping ahead and I struggle with it at times and I've been using pc's since they first came out. Might have to go back to traveling around and visiting shops to purchase goods ............

Earlier I wrote to Barclays, and I have just received their useless reply ;-

we closed our secure messaging service on the 31st of March. You can still download old messages but you won?t be able to reply or start any new ones. We?re working on a new chat service in Online Banking and we?ll let you know when it?s live. If the option to reply is available for you, please be aware that any response will not be picked up.

We are currently unable to respond to your message and we are sorry for this. If you still need us, you can use Chat in the Barclays app ? it?s easy to use, just tap ?Chat? under the ?Contact Us? section on the home screen and you?ll be connected. You don?t need to stay in the app to keep the chat open ? if you leave, we?ll send you a message when we reply.
That sort of helpfulness would have me investigating alternative banks. A similar level of customer service was a major factor in my dumping Barclays years ago.

My wife bought a quantity of self-adhesive card holders to stick on the back of phones, uses one herself, and gives them to others as gifts!

Question? Capt Popeye, why ‘sad’ on my #13, we have a fibre optic landline for regular phone and internet, , we have both P.C. and Apple laptops with internet access as well iPads, so I don’t feel a need to be glued to my mobile.
Most of my personal contacts are in the area, so face to face contact is sill the predominant form of communication, those that do live further afield are contactable by email, skype or phone from our landline.

I fully understand why there is this added security device of texting a code, but it does at times irritate me as I usually find that I have left my mobile in the car, or put it down somewhere and have to look for it, I am not one of those who seem to be permanently attached to their mobile, it’s there for occasional use only.

Ahoy there M P ; no offence intended but when dealing with Banks etc they very often require to send the Caller a verification code , tis i gather The Modern Way , so guess that we just have to be prepared when doing such comunication with Financial Institutions to have our Moble ready , and waiting , for such a Verification code , especially as these codes often have a very short useable time allocated to them

I got bgrd the other week , selected code by 'land line' , well the system failed me the first 3 incomming calls , so I had 3 verification codes , I methodically entered each one in order of reciept , the last one worked OK , so guess that the Inteligent part of the system figured out my dilema ?

Appologies Mr P
