Actually the critical thing is the earthing for the ATU. Many don't ground the SSB itself at all.

Hi Benbow,
Yes, I agree. It is essential to earth the ATU but not so for the radio itself. Someone mentioned in a recent thread (one of many on this subject!) that Icom suggest in their fitting instructions that the radio be earthed, but I, and all the other cruisers I know don't. Mine has never been earthed and it's been in regular use while cruising for over seven years.

Greenham Regis on the south coast have this strip. so does the place in Bristol (MEI I think it is).

The nice man on my long range course explained that at least half of the aerial is the sea!!

I am trying to connect the ATU to the sea, hence I need the copper braid.

I am still having problems finding a source and the sad bit is that I know that I saw a mention recently of a source, possibly connected to motor trade?
