I've been trying to paint the moulded 'rubbing strake' and am regretting it.

The cleaning and sanding went well, as did the two coats of Hempel Undercoat-Primer. Smooth as a baby's.... But the first layer of Hempel's Brill Gloss gave me the runs. I did my best to 'tip off', but to no avail. I'm now letting it harden-dry before attacking it tomorrow/Saturday with some aggressive rasps and ruff sanding paper that would lift tarmac from roads.

I now have some Hempel's Thinners - which I should have used in the first place, had I known better - and will try adding a 'smidgen' to the ~250ml left in one pot. Perhaps about 3% -ish.
Then I think I'll try a 3" roller....

What does the team think, once the laughter has died down...?

In the dim and distant past, I tried mixing makes. Dipped the plastic foam roller into the tray, and watched the foam dissolve into goo.

Worth trialling a bit first ?

Agree too much paint. I’ve never seen tipping off do anything useful and it normally makes the finish worse despite lots of people recommending it. Just make sure the roller or brush doesn’t have too much paint and it should give a good finish.
Also agree about temperature, I’d want it 15C or more and not too humid for a decent finish, although I did the topsides of my old boat in about 10C and that looked like it was sprayed by a pro despite being rolled by someone who didn’t know what they were doing at the time.

Just my comment ... I would not be using a gloss paint on a rubbing strake anyway ... I use a wood stain .... basically so that 1) I don't leave paint on fenders / pontoons etc .. 2) stain is easily touched up and wood looks like wood !

As to your 'runs' .... have to agree with others .. possibly trying to coat too quickly and coat too heavy ... needs to be lots of thinnest coats repeated ..

My guess would be that the paint was far too cold, went on too thick and wouldn’t brush out. Then gravity took over!

I’m not sure where you are but its far to cold to gloss paint outside in the SW at the moment.
Even in our sun lounge it's a bit on the cold side for painting/varnishing just now, the mast should have been touch dry by 19:00 last night and it is still tacky this morning

Roll on global warming - then roll on!

As to Refueler's tip, I agree wood should look like wood. And my capping rail certainly does need some TLC. But.... moulded grp should look like painted moulded grp.

Ok ... I took it 'moulded' as in when used to describe wood mouldings ..... if GRP - then agreed ...

Is that paint also dripped onto the Mercedes to the right ??

Await a mild dry morning with low humidity after a not-freezing night. ( cold grp, condensation blah blah)
Warm the pot of paint in a saucepan of warm water and use a nice new soft posh brush. You know it’s right when the paint just glides on easily and doesn’t need reworking and dragging around .
So that’s May then
Would I use thinner? No
Good looking boat btw 😊👍

Edit: Is this the year when you’ll be launching? 🤞

Inshallah!

As for the paint splodges ( technical - Ed. ) I suspect it was Tradewinds who snuck in during the night with his splodger brush!
Or - them starlings eating the wrong sort of berries again! ;)

As for the ladder, it looks much the same t'other way up. ( also technical - Ed. )

I used to have a ladder like and it was always the wider part of the ladder that was located on the ground for greater stability
It's a 'combi'....

Both sections have a 79cm 'broad base'. It's intended to clip together with a platform. If you look really, really closely, you'll see the two narrow ends. The end you cannot see - and I can't be bovvered going back out to photograph it - is a broad end just like the top end.

I was wondering that - but clever to match the paint colour to the red car behind which must have had a few paint drips or runs on it.
D'you seriously thinnk my wife - any wife - would let her car be sat within paint-splodging range when I was milling around with an overloaded paintbrush??
