And another thing....!

Zinio... I gave it a whirl but it is hard work to use: difficult to properly see the pages as it is just a facsimile of the original magazine layout rather than reformatted for the iPad (other tablets available etc etc). Also, you get bombarded with "suggestions" (read: adverts) for other digital "lifestyle" titles that i dont think i should have to endure when i have paid good money for my edition.

However what I really object to is having to buy a separate sub for the digital version when I already have subs for the paper versions of PBO and YM. Many paper subs now include the digital version either at no additonal cost or at a discount. IPC are missing a trick here to build up the digital readership, especially for people away from the uk on their boats. I discussed this with the IPC chaps at SIBS and they just shrugged their shoulders so I expect nothing will change.

If we did subscriber only copies without cover lines would you subscribe ? We do on some titles (non boaty).

Not a sales pitch a genuine question.

Cover lines for the news stand will need to stay I am afraid.

With the suggestions on here you would get me back as a subscriber. Disappointingly, I have not felt the mag worth subscribing to for 20 years

We shrugged our shoulders ? That I find hard to believe as it was proabbly me.

As I say to all the digital landscape will change in the next 12 months. No one is missing a trick but perhaps it's not as simple as it sounds ? We have been digital for neary six years and the landscape is only changing now thanks to the iPad. Yes that's the iPad not tablet before we go down that road !

Cheers

Then you will continue to struggle for readership

Where do you get the impression that Yachting Monthly is struggling for readers? It's true that readership across the group has fallen a little, but there is a recession going on if you hadn't noticed :D, Yachting Monthly has bucked the trend of many other publications in IPC and other publishing houses

Are you saying a decline in sales is because we put cover lines on so punters can see what's in it at news stand ? Can you please explain this to me please and I am not being sarcastic ?

The mystery of an attractive woman is wanting to know whats under the covering.! Its the same thing the Tantalizing cover is what attracts, and invites you to look deeper

my website tells me what people are watching the website on

the number of ipad viewers has gone from almost zero to 15 per cent in a year

not got a clue what this means for magazines, tv channels or sailing websites

the boundaries are slipping around all over the place

As you know it means we protect the content online otherwise no one gets paid to write it and there for no content.

Like him or loathe him Mr Murdoch is right in his model.

I write a column for a magazine in the states called small craft advisor

take a look at their front covers

http://smallcraftadvisor.com/

they take the front images very seriously

pay a truly terrible $100 a thousand for my bon mots

but I get some really crazy emails, and occasionally real letters, from their readers.

so that makes it worth while

dylan

like those front covers never see it over here though shame i might buy it !

There is a load of old bollox re cover lines being spouted here. Surely one buys the magazine for the content, not the cover, and the cover lines can help you to decide if you want to buy it, or not. Anyone not buying because of those lines is in my view,. demented

Might have bucked the trend but an increasing circulation of dedicated readers is what you need, better than whsmith readers who buy once in 6 months

And bizarrely we get the same from our US readers .. Both over email and when we exhibit at overseas shows, apart from good old boat they say nothing touches UK mags. Their words not mine.

I should say praise where praise is due , Last year I bought 2 copies both were better than a few years ago .
Guess I'm jaded though because I still get a thrill when I come across one from the 60's or 70's That I haven't seen before specially when they are in good condition .

I am sure you at IPC know as well as I do that other sailing magazine editors read this forum.
If I were them I would be rubbing my hands at the apathy shown to change things.
I would be listening to what the readers actually want and be looking to see if I could alter my magazine to grab those W.H Smith readers or increasing my subscription.
This thread should be one where you are not defending things on every post but asking “what do you want and how can we provide that for you”
